“Better than all the bad reviews say”
Reviewed 18 May 2014 via mobile

I was worried about this place after having read some of the negative reviews, people complaining about spiders in and outdoor environment and that the garden wasn't well manicured. This is a wild tropical environment. I took the Segway tour of the garden it was wonderful. The guide was very knowledgable about all the plants and gave me one really great fruit that tasted sour and then another fruit to eat with it to make it tast sweet! It was like nature's magic. Really enjoyed the care the guide took to make sure I was comfortable on the Segway before we went off road. As I gained confidence he even let me race him :D. Do not expect some well manicured English garden. Expect young, local, knowledgable guides to orientate you to their beautiful island garden.

Aloha!

We are glad you came to see for yourself that the positive reviews are the people that have visited us and had fantastic times seeing the gardens and taking the tours. We appreciate your thoughts and taking to to share with others that want to visit the gardens, but have similar thoughts on other reviews. Many of these are placed by those that would gain at our loss of you stopping in to see us for yourself. We do have a money back guarantee for that very concern.

We have been improving since we opened in 1995, but mostly since new management came in last year. Our gardens have over 1,000 species identified and are adding to that list every month in a progressive identification project. It has been estimated (as the gardens was developing) that we have over 5,000 unique plants in the gardens. We are out to label every one that is unique for our guests to appreciate the immensity of our collection.

We have over 25 acres in the lower gardens alone which is far more than any other garden in Hawaii when coupled with the Rain Forest Trail and Kamaee Falls. In all we have hundreds of acres for our guests to roam. We hope you will be one of the many guests that come back over and over and never tire of the changing scenery in the gardens.

You didn't mention the audio tour that is complimentary for a paid guests to the gardens. This is another unique aspect of our gardens that no other offers and is not available if you come with a free pass.

Other things can only see if on the zip line tour and the Segway tour also goes to places and you experience plants that are not on our other tours. You can also have a great time with our Garden Director on a Directed Tour where he shares very cool secrets that he knows about the gardens, plants, history and more. The tours are truly one-of-a-kind views of the gardens. Of course we recommend our guests try them all, mostly because we have and are so enthusiastic about sharing them.

We hope you have a chance to come back and see the other ways of viewing the gardens. We are constantly improving and love to hear back from guests on how we are doing to make their experience better each and every time. We hope you will return to watch us grow (literally!).

A Hui Hou (come again soon)!!

“Lovely Gardens”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

Seeing this advertised in various brochures we expected a lot more. Having said that there was a nice walk, "Rainforest Walk" with various plants labeled. A drive to a waterfall that was nice and then the botanical gardens themselves. The garden was large w/ many different plants all labeled. We were underwhelmed w/ the maze. We were unable to do the Riverwalk due to the torrential rains the prior day. Do ask for the AAA discount. There are restrooms but they were outhouse type toilets.

“Sedway and Botanical Gardens”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

We rode sedways through the World Botanical Gardens at highway marker 16 on Hwy 19 going north from Hilo....It is two hours and we went through gardents with 2,000 species of
flowers, trees, fruit, etc. We also went through a rain forest and up to the top. Our guide, Arlenn was wonderful...a young man that knew the history and very knowledgeable about
the gardens. We ate different fruit off the trees and shrubs.....and the Sedways were a blast and very easy to learn. Try it!

“"Nothing to write home about, but still an interesting stop"”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

We stopped by to explore the botanical gardens to see, learn about enjoy the various plants that grow on the Big Island. The grounds aren't in the best shape as it appeared that what was once a manacured pathway with signage to identify the various plants now grown over and unkept. We had the place to ourselves as nobody else seemed to be there which seemed odd for a botanical garden. We wandered around aimlesly through a maze which generated some laughter and fun. The garden has many interesting trees and foilage to explore. We strolled around for the better part of 2 hours exploring and educating ourselves on what each tree and flower was about. We also stopped by the falls which is about a three minute drive up the hill. This wasn't overly impressive as we had seen many other falls on the island that were much more spectacular than this one. The young girl in the entry building was very pleasant as was the two gardeners who gave us some hints while we scurried around the maze. But only after some begging. It cost $13.00 dollars each which is reasonable. I could of rated this as poor to terrible based on my perspective of what a botanical garden should be, but once inside we took it for the beauty that it offered. Choice is yours.
