My husband and I spent a week at the very private Lokahi Garden Cottage and found it very comfortable. The large property abounds with an abundance of flowering trees, plants and bushes that it was a pleasure to walk amongst. There's a Border Collie who will be your friend forever if you throw sticks for him to fetch. And a few sheep and chickens. From the far end of the property you can see Mauna Kea at a distance, and also the island of Maui.
A short walk (or drive) into the small town of Hawi, you'll find restaurants, gift shops, and (my weakness) locally made ice cream.
During our stay at the cottage we visited the Pololu Valley; Mauna Kea; Kamahamahe's birthplace; hiked the Ala Kahakai Trail and visited the Hawi Saturday Farmers' Market. Of course, except for the Farmer's Market, you will need a car in order to do these things.
