My husband and I just returned from Hawaii and a lovely stay at the Bay House B&B.

We only got to stay one night. We would have LOVED to stay longer, but there was no availability. One night is definitely worth it, but book early if you want to stay multiple nights.

The location of the Bay House is secluded and private, but very close to town, within easy walking distance: An excellent accommodation in the Hilo area and accessible to nearby sites such as Akaka Falls and Volcanoes National Park.

We stayed in the Bay Room - the views from the room and the patio were amazing, overlooking Hilo Bay. The healthy breakfast was perfect to enjoy on the patio while watching the surfers waiting to catch a wave and the cruise ships in the distance.

Tina, the hostess gave us a kind and generous welcome, which included a bottle of wine when she learned that we had just married. In addition, I also accidentally left my jacket (and keys) behind, which Tina promptly shipped to me in Chicago.

Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home, and for the above and beyond hospitality you showed us.

Our only B&B experiences were in Ireland so we thought we would give it a try in Hawaii. Our luck in choosing the Bay House in Hilo could not have been better.

The house has three beautiful rooms, each with private lanai and a view of the bay. A hot tub spa is also available. The spacious lobby is reserved for guests and affords local decor, comfortable seating, reference information, liesure materials and delicious breakfast fruit, cereals, breads and beverages.

The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The sound of the breeze off the water at night is oh so relaxing. The rooms and baths are spotless and well appointed.

Our hosts - Tom and Tina - were readily available for advice and information about Hilo and the other islands. They treated us more like family than guests.

After our initial and terrific experience at the Bay House, I wish we had chosen guest houses for Oahu and Kauai as well. The large hotels were nice, but it just didn't feel the same.

I stayed at the Bay House with my husband and in-laws for three nights over Thanksgiving and we all loved the accommodations. Tina and Tom were excellent hosts and provided us with plenty of information on the island as it was our first stay in Hawaii. It was a short drive to Volcano National Park which we loved. They put out a wonderful breakfast each morning with delicious fresh fruit which we enjoyed on the private decks. The rooms were extremely clean, with very comfortable king beds. I slept so peacefully with the sounds of the waves crashing and frogs chirping. Each morning I went for a run along the bay and still can't get over how beautiful it was. The Bay House is situated very close to town so the restaurants are very accessible but you still feel as though you are very isolated. I highly recommend this Bed and Breakfast to other travelers!

My wife and I recently stayed in the Palm room for 3 nights. There are 3 rooms, all fairly similiar. The rooms are beautifully appointed, spacious and all with their own lanai.
The owners (who we basically didn't see for the entire 3 days) provide a terrific breakfast of cereals, juices, bread, fruit and tea/coffee. By 7.00 am, the trays are waiting for one to take back to your lanai, where you have the best views of Hilo Bay.
The Bayhouse is just a short walk to the edge of town. We loved the first pub you come to, Cronies.
Hilo is not a touristy type of town however it's the real Hawaii and there's enough to see if one is prepared to look. The Botanical Gardens north of the town has to be seen to be believed. Well worth the $15 entry fee.
I recommend the Bayhouse as the perfect place if you want a relaxing short break and guaranteed privacy.

  • Liked — The view, the lanai, spacious rooms, not expensive.
  • Disliked — The owners went out of their way to avoid us. But then again, that can be a good thing.

My husband's and my stay in the Bay House was wonderful! I loved the beauty, not only of the setting but of the decoration of the rooms, presentation of food, etc. VERY clean and comfortable. Though so convenient to shopping and restaurants, it feels very secluded, and there is a great sense of privacy which I liked. I loved the banana bread and fruit Tina served for breakfasts. Hilo itself is a lovely place, and from what driving around we did, it seemed to me to be right in the most beautiful part of the island. Great restaurants (notably Uncle Billy's) and fun shopping all very close. Lots of other fun stuff to do -- beaches, horseback riding, hiking, etc. -- in easy driving range. Things to be prepared for: yes, those tree frogs are loud at night. Tina provides earplugs but you might consider bringing along a small personal fan or white noise machine if unfamiliar noises make it hard for you to sleep. Also if you are Christian, be prepared for a noticable undercurrent of hostility toward Christianity among some of the caucasian residents -- barbed bumper stickers, comments from shopkeepers, etc. -- nothing you can't handle : ) !! All part of the interest and excitement of being in a new place -- overall a wonderful experience!

A very enjoyable B&B. We stayed in the Palm Room, the smallest I think, but with a King Bed. Room had a ceiling fan and great cross ventilation so room was comfortably cool at night. Room was clean and lanai had a pretty view. Bathroom was spacious.
Breakfast was fruit, breads and an assortment of cereals, yogurts and juices.
Owners were friendly though not to be seen after check-in.
Noise from frogs is a bit of a problem at night with windows open. Earplugs were supplied (without asking) and they did solve the problem.
Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
