We've visited the Big Island and Hilo many times but this was our first stay at the Bay House, and we enjoyed being able to sit on our lanai and watch surfers tackling the waves as we ate breakfast--the view across Hilo Bay was unbeatable. There are plenty of coqui frogs but they seem to be everywhere in Hilo these days, and by opening and closing a combination of windows and doors we balanced the frogs' calls with the ocean's roar. The bed in the Harbor room was really comfortable and, as others have noted, everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was delicious, Tina was very helpful, and little extras--like the umbrellas by the front door--set the Bay House apart. We'll definitely stay here again if we can.

This is exactly how I imagined visiting Hawaii when I closed my eyes. The views are absolutely amazing and still private from the other visitors. Close to Hilo but far enough away and private enough that its very calming and relaxing. The hot tub is great, especially when you can hear the waves crashing mere yards away. Breakfast is served by 7am daily and is incredibly delicious with fresh local fruits. The covered parking is nice too for the occasional 5 minute rain storm. The hosts are very knowledgeable about the local attractions as well as ideas for local cuisine. I cannot wait to go back and spend more time at the Bay House!

Room Tip: One room has a private lanai, but its smaller than the shared one for the other 2 rooms. They still...

It's our observation that on TripAdvisor, people tend to either gush about Bed-&-Breakfasts, or to condemn them; we try to tread a middle ground, hence our present rating of four stars rather than five. At this place, more than any other place we stayed on the Big Island, the warm, humid night is filled with the tumult of apparently hundreds of co-qui frogs, which will either peacefully lull you to sleep, or drive you crackers. Each 1-2 inch frog produces a bird-like "Co-qui!" whose volume is far out of proportion to the frog's size.

The Harbor Room has no air-conditioning (we don't believe that the others do, either), just a ceiling fan which was not over the centre of the bed. Hence one of us got too much draft, and the other got too little. Oddly, the bedside lamps were far too bright for late-night reading, although the couch was quite comfortable. The small but beautiful writing-desk had no lamp at all.

The big advantages of this place are (1) location, just a short drive from the center of old Hilo, and (2) the spacious covered bay-facing verandah, accessible directly from the room but separated from other rooms by a screen, with tables and chairs which allow late-night dining out-of-doors. Also, the breakfasts are laid out for each room in the nearby kitchen/entranceway, by 7 am, so that you can grab them when you wake up; no-one knocks on your door, which is good. There is a clean, well-lit hot tub outside the house, with a great view over the bay; the tub has a special frame that makes removing the insulating lid easy (every tub should have such a frame). But the tub is accessed by first going around the back of the house, where there is comfortable parking for 3 cars.

Breakfast was a selection of cut fruit, and a small egg-and-potato scramble. Coffee and tea are available. Unlike most B-&-Bs, there is a big communal fridge available for guest use, which is a big plus for us cold-drink fanatics.

Room Tip: All rooms will have good views over the Bay.

We enjoyed this place so much, we made a point to return on our second visit to the Big Island. The view from the private lanais are so serene and soothing, I didn't want to leave. The breakfast was delicious and so plentiful I may have over-indulged. It's close enough to downtown Hilo to walk to the shops and farmers market. Although the frogs seemed loud at first, they added to the ambiance and didn't disturb our sleep.

We stayed for 5 nights in the palm room which is (like the other 2 rooms) spotlessly clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. The ocean view from the lanai is lovely and perfect for eating the breakfast consisting of fruit, avocado, yogurt, cake, hot dish, toast and eggs whilst discussing where to go for the day. The hot tub looking out over the bay is a nice touch and the 5-10 minute stroll into downtown Hilo really handy.

Tina is a great host, very friendly and helpful. We would stay here again without any hesitation if we visit the big island again.

My wife and I are fairly private people and not have not typically stayed at many B&B's, but The Bay House and its terrifc hosts have completely changed our mindsets. Tina, the owner / hostess is very helpful and sincerely friendly in every way; it is obvious that she loves people and helping them to enjoy their vacations in Hawaii. She was generous with her time and informative in her suggestions of places to see and things to do.

The B&B itself is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. There were fresh and aromatic Hawaiian flowers in our room. The view of the bay is great and we really enjoyed the relaxing sounds of waves in the morning. We did hear the coqui frogs chirping like little bird just as we did in other parts of the island. I personally enjoyed having them singing us to sleep.

The bed and linens are top rate.
The free breakfast was consistently tasty, attractive, and fresh.

I would highly recommend The Bay House and hope to stay there again in the future.

The Bay House is a beautiful, comfortable home away from home. We had a wonderful stay there. The breakfast is just right. We were excited to see what local fruits we would get each morning. It had the right amount of privacy and friendliness. The view of Hilo Bay from the lanai couldn't have been more breathtaking. It is walking distance to downtown Hilo, but far enough away to have a quiet night's sleep. We would go back in a heartbeat!
