“On 1st Impression Almost Bolted. Glad We Stayed.”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

The drive up on this is terrible, especially if you go around back where it borders the junkyard. We'd paid in advance and almost had decided to write off the money and find another place. But, it ended up charming us. 1950s style, open-air lobby. Room with balcony overlooked a coy pond and Hilo Bay. Shop-warn old girl but clean and relatively cheap. The attached restaurant (Coconut Grill) had great food at reasonable prices. And, the music entertainment was a highlight of the trip. Native Hawaiian playing guitar and singing beautifully. At one point another diner, another elderly Hawaiian man, began singing harmony with him. Treasured memory.

Room Tip: Get something overlooking the coy pond and Hilo Bay.

This hotel is very well maintained. Everything works. There is a small refrigerator in the room, hair dryer, iron, coffee maker. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby. The people at the front desk are very friendly and helpful. These are the pros. The cons: This property is really old and although well maintained I don't think they did any remodeling in the last 50 years. The room that we had was tiny and not very comfortable. I believe there are larger rooms in this hotel. The towels were small and very thin. There is no counter space in the bathroom, so nowhere to put the personal stuff. There is parking in the back, but they lock the back door at 8 PM, so you need to walk all around the hotel to get to your room. Generally everything is really basic.

The rooms are older (1957), but they did have screen doors to the Lanai, which allowed us to enjoy the night air on Hawaii, which the five star hotels we stayed at in Kona, Kauai and Honolulu did not have (screen doors). The bed was comfortable and there was a small refrigerator and a TV, though we didn't spend any time with TV. The desk service is excellent and the Coconut Grill on the lobby level served outstanding food for dinner (breakfast at the Grill was provided via coupons from the hotel). The two rib dishes were very good (my favorites), though my fellow travelers who love fish, enjoyed their meals as well. The nearby park is a great morning or early evening walk and Hilo is cooler than Kona (although it can get rain), so it was a great place to stay for heading out anywhere on the island.

We stayed here due to late arrival in Big Island. It was easy to find even at the night. The hotel staff was nice and helpful. The hotel is out dated. Our room was small. The amenities were basic and outdated, but functioning. I walked around the hotel the next morning and found it was in a very nice area on the seaside. There are lots of banyan trees nearby. The hotel is close to the airport so if you want to sleep in, then your won't be able to because the of noises of plane taking off. We didn't hear anything after 9 pm.

This isn't a fancy hotel, but it was an excellent place to stay with everything I needed. It's a low-rise building, different wings clearly built at different time, so it was a bit of a maze until I got used to it (they give you a map at check-in). There are some nice interior courtyards, one with a pool (I didn't use it) and also a nice park across the street on the bay. It was very quiet except for buzzing from some type of insect - but closing the windows eliminated that.

It's near the other Hilo hotels, but the area isn't anything special. The main road is somewhat industrial. Fortunately there are a few restaurants and a diners nearby. There is parking all around the hotel, it seemed to be enough.

Pros: it was well maintained, had a refrigerator in the room but no mini-bar (I hate those). Shower had good hot water and good pressure. Room had a ceiling fan plus an Air Conditioner. I used the later when it got humid. There is free wifi in the lobby which I found more than adequate for checking e-mail. In the room (which is higher speed) has a daily fee. Plenty of electrical outlets in the room. Also an in-room coffee maker. There are coin laundry machines available. I used the hotel restaurant for breakfast, it was pretty good.

Cons: The room had little storage: just a 3 drawer chest and the closet was partly occupied by the fridge and coffee maker. No in-room safe, I am a big fan of that. The towels were a bit on the thin scratch side, but I've had worse elsewhere. And it seems like a small item, but there was no list of what stations were on what TV channels; that really does help when one wants to just watch a little TV.

Overall I was happy with my stay, and would stay here again.

For a one night stop before an early flight. The location was good and close to the airport. Located on the Bay with plenty of area to walk around and some restaurants. Would want to spend more time here, basic and comfortable

The Hilo Seaside Hotel is pretty basic, but it's reasonable, and it's in an absolutely lovely area. The street it's on--Banyan Way--is lined with incredible banyan trees, and it leads to a large, manicured park. It's also near the water and the sunset and sunrise views right outside the hotel are perfect.
