“Stairs Stairs Stairs”
Reviewed 8 May 2007

The last thing I want to see (other than bedbugs and filth) is flights of stairs between me and my room. Every single room has at least some stairs and most rooms require a flight up or down to get to.

Our room had a view of a concrete wall about 3 feet away, and the bathroom window looked out on a field of rusting propane tanks and iron scrap and weeds.

The room was mostly clean and the linens were clean but very cheap and rough. 120 count maybe?

Some mildew around A/C.A/C was very very undersized and took forever to do anything.

Shower was mounted at about 5' 8" and had a good shot at my navel when pointed as high as possible. It is the correct height for all customers that are under 5 feet tall.

The sink has no counter space at all. Only the space on the edge of the bowl could be used to set anything down.

Staff was polite and helpful.

Halls are too narrow to allow you to pass the maid cart with a bag,and there isn't much way to move the cart to a place that both fit past. Plan on lifting your bag OVER your head.

This hotel is below what would be acceptable to Motel 6 or Red Roof. This hotel is not ADA ready.

Carpet was pretty ugly but not really dirty.

There are no backout curtains.

I give this a 2 because it could have been dirty and it really wasn't.

The room was under $100 and for the price it wasn't great but it wasn't a ripoff either.

Will not stay here again.... I'll spring for more expensive hotel to get an elevator

We stayed here for one night for the purpose of going to the Volcano Park (can't recommend the park enough, it was AMAZING). We were hoping to check in a couple of hours early if the room was ready, but the hotel was full and we weren't able to, so we came back at check in time and it still wasn't quite ready. 20 minutes later, we had our room and thought we'd been transported back to the late 60's/early 70's. For example, there was bright turquoise, thick, shag carpet, cane furniture etc. As my boyfriend said, it would have been the absolute bees' knees in its day - but its day passed a long time ago! We went to the volcano park, came back late, found the hotel parking lot full so parked across the road in the gravel lot in front of the sea ponds. Were woken at 3am by a LOUD party going on in that parking lot - it's obviously a local hangout as there were a lot of people there and they were noisy. Managed to get back to sleep after ages of stressing about the possibility of the rental car being broken into by drunks hanging out in the parking lot. Woke up early and checked out to head back to the volcano park for the day. The car was fine - luckily! All in all, this hotel was WAY dated and if that night was not an exception, is right opposite a bit of a local's party/gathering spot on the weekends. However, all the hotels in Hilo look dated and very average - in fact Hilo itself looked dated - so it's probably much of a muchness wherever you stay. Just head to the volcanoes!!!

  • Liked — Reasonably close to the volcano park
  • Disliked — It was straight out of the late '60's.

Hilo Seaside Motel was Okay. They have a few problems, such as parking, but the staff and restaurant were great! Even if you don't stay at the SeaSide Motel you should go to the Coconut Grill restaurant inside the motel. Best food I found it Hilo! Causal dinning and afforable prices. Only thing I really disliked was that there were no elevators in the building. Made it difficult to get everything up to the room. Also, the pool closes at 6:00 pm so no night swimming. Overall though its a clean motel with afforable prices. I will stay there again on my next trip to the "Big Island". Oh, if you do stay there ask for a Ocean Wing room. Ocean view rooms have a balcony where as the Garden Wing rooms do not.

  • Liked — Clean rooms and great restaurant at affordable price.
  • Disliked — No elevators.

I stayed here as part of a group of high school students. There were many teams there. It was noisy! I sure wouldn't have wanted to be there if I wasn't part of the group. The room was clean, though with a musty/smokey odor. I'm very sensitive to odors. It was OK for a night,

Stayed here for 2 nights both arriving and departing out of Hilo Airport. Got a very reasonable rate of $72 through their website. It's close to the airport (about a mile) so very convenient, although you will hear occasional airplane noise starting around 6:30 am and until about 11 pm. The hotel is old but rooms were very clean, and small. The bathrooms had clean grouting and I didn't see any mildew, rust or grime. There is a dampness and mustiness that seems to permeate things, but this is understandable and likely the case with all the hotels due to the frequent rains. Buildings are 2-3 stories and there are quite a few stairs and no elevators, so I actually recommend requesting a ground level floor in the inside court (garden room) where it is much quieter. The first night, they upgraded us to a partial ocean deluxe room on the 2nd floor overlooking the koi pond and a sideways view of the bay from a narrow lanai. I would actually not recommend this as the traffic noise from the main road was quite constant, and this was bothersome, even after closing the windows. You see more of other guests' lanais than of any ocean. My king room had the airconditioning unit next to the bed and it was also quite noisy. The last night we got a standard room on the ground floor inside the garden area with two double beds, and I preferred this to the "ocean view" as it was much quieter. The air conditioning unit was on the farthest wall away from the beds so the noise wasn't an issue. Carpeting is blue shag and they should remove it (esp. given the climate and dampness) but I guess carpeting muffles footsteps from rooms above yours. They should also consider repainting the rooms as the color (sort of a yellow buttercream) and lighting make the room appear a little dingy and slightly gloomy. Rooms have small refrigerators but no coffee makers but you can buy a cup from the onsite restaurant in the morning. Reception desk service was friendly and no waiting to check in or out. Parking was the major problem we had with this hotel. They simply do not have adequate amount of spaces in their tiny lot, and it was a problem on both stays even finding parking on the street and on the side street next to the hotel. Especially when arriving late as we did, I would recommend parking in the loading area out front, unloading the luggage, checking in and finding out where you can park (they will indicate where on a map) and then go park. One night we ended up leaving our car in a questionably legit spot in a muddy area in the park next to the bay, and even then it appeared we got the last available spot, as I observed other cars also hunting for parking. We did not eat in the restaurant but Ken's House of Pancakes is within walking distance or a short drive on the way to the airport, and is open 24 hours a day. Food is decent and the portions large with very friendly and fast service.

Overall this hotel is fine if you get a very good rate, just need a place to stay overnight, and don't expect too much. If I return to Hilo I may spend a little more next time and try another place, perhaps the Hilo Hawaiian. And if you're in Hilo on a Saturday, don't miss the great farmer's market in town!

  • Liked — Value for price paid and compared to other accomodations, convenient distance to/from airport
  • Disliked — Few amenities, bed not very comfortable, some noise, stairs, no internet access
  • Tips/Secrets — Good farmers market on Saturdays in town

Your choices are limited and not too good in Hilo. This place was okay for the price--not many other places you can stay on the island for twice the price. But there's a reason. The hotel is right out of the 60's and needs updating. Rooms are small but ours was clean. A/C is a noisy window unit that doesn't seal properly.

Parking is a MAJOR problem here--there is essentially no parking lot and very limited on street. Really didn't like parking two blocks away on a dark street.

And get an interior room away from the street noise--there's no ocean view anyway.

Food was likewise okay but not great.

Other than parking, everything about this place is okay but just not very nice much less elegant.

  • Liked — Price is right
  • Disliked — Everything else
  • Tips/Secrets — Get an interior room and get a parking place early.

If you're planning to only hang in the hotel for just bathing and sleeping, then this is the hotel for you! It is centrally located to the airport and the Volcano National Park. It is in walking distance to a pretty good 24 hour cafe. The hotel itself is definitely not fancy, but it's clean. The price can't be beat. We stayed there for a couple nights when we arrived and also the last night before leaving the island since it's so close to the airport and our flight left early the next morning.
