Very nice place to visit. The flora is stunning. The paved trail is very nice and the waterfall is awesome. We were based on the Kona side in Captain Cook, but the drive to the Hilo side to see Akaka Falls is well worth it. And then to learn about the salamander type creature that climbs the falls to lay eggs is pretty amazing.

The falls are pretty special. The admin is minimal - $5 to park but getting there to see the full falls is strenuous for us olde folk. I’d guess over 500 stairs! You can see the top part of the falls from the parking lot (1st photo ) so if stairs are tough for you, think about just staying there.

There is a nicely done walking trail here. Be prepared for steps. You don't get anywhere near the falls and there is definitely no swimming. Plus, it was crowded. There's a bathroom - that's good. Park outside the gates to avoid the parking fee.

Spend an hour to two here. Walk the trail loop in the counter-clockwise direction. Take your time.
Park outside the parking lot on the incoming street and pay $1 per entrant.

We took our family here for a Sunday stroll. The trail is an easy walk up and down paved path and in the middle is the overlook for the falls. The trees, flowers and vines embrace the whole area like a sacred grotto. Just lovely.

This is a gorgeous waterfall +400 ft. surrounded by incredibly lush foliage. The .5 mile loop is easy for most all people to walk. This is a shorts, T-shirts, and sneakers visit.

Amazing exploration. Took this on the way to Hilo and it is gorgeous. Also flew over it on a Helicopter ride with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters out of Waikaloa on the Big Island. Amazing.

If you are in Hilo or Kona I the way tomBilo take time to see the Akaka Falls. A bit of a walk to get there but we’ll worth it. You walk through a rain forest to get there. The falls are amazing.

It is just a short walk to the falls and there are beautiful plants and flowers all the way to it. If you go the other direction at the beginning of the trail, you go to another falls that you can't see as easily as the Akaka Falls. Don't forget your camera.

My family of 4 pulled up to the parking lot and noticed that you have to pay for entry and parking. I was kind of bummed but when walking up to the sign it said "Kama'aina rate: FREE" I asked the attending at the entrance if the parking as a kama'aina rate and he replied "free". THATS AMAZING! We enjoyed the walk around the grounds. Lots of native plants to see. Even my 3 and 2 year old enjoyed the walk. Akaka falls has got to be the most beautiful falls on earth! We will be back again
