“One of the best B&B I have ever stayed”

This is really a great place to stay. Next to a falls, and great breakfast is in the mornings. The staff is very professional and caring. The location is outside of town and very quite (pretty much middle of no where kind of feeling). I would definitely recommend this place.

We were first drawn to Kulaniapia Falls from the picture of the waterfall and the fact it was away from the crowds. On the drive to the Inn we were mesmerized by the scenery. We stayed in the Orchid Room at Harmony House and enjoyed the sound of the falls from there. Our host and hostess were very amicable and gave great tips for places to visit. We are already planning our next trip back to the Inn with our family. It is a great value!

One of the most beautiful places we have stayed.

Waterfall is absolutely exquisite and one can swim in it too.

The walks around the hotel are lovely. We saw Mauna Kea wrapped in snow from the front
gate of the hotel.

Room was nice, very simple. No place to put the fancy pillows though and we did not
like leaving them on the floor. Bathroom nice too.

Best was the view of the waterfall.
Least was not being able to sit down by the waterfall as we did not have time.

I have stayed at Kulaniapia Falls on four occasions. Each visit is better than the last. The drive up from Hilo beings our journey into the Hawaii that we all dream of: a private, lush, luxurious, private waterfall getaway. During my four years of visits, the inn has grown into a more sustainable resort with hydro-electricity generation (no more generators!). The rooms are large and well-appointed with high thread count sheets (a personal favorite), beautiful linens, private baths, and Hawaiian literature and art. Our favorite room overlooks Hilo Bay and the mountains in between.
The breakfast setup is wonderful, with personal orders accommodated, in addition to the abundant tropical fruits, breads, cakes, waffles, and Hawaiian coffee.
Our favorite activity on each trip is a descent into Kulaniapia Falls... where each guest is welcome to venture for their own private waterfall swim. Beautifully landscaped paths lead us to the gem of Kuliapia. I highly recommend this personal, private, once-in-a-lifetime experience to all Hawaii visitors.

Words are completely inadequate to describe the awesome beauty of the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls. We have had the privilege of staying there on 2 different occasions and just returned from there with friends of ours. The waterfall is amazing and the view of Hilo is great and the service is outstanding. Add to this great breakfasts provided by the hosts and wonderful rooms at a very affordable price and you end up with one of the best values in all of Hawaii.

My wife, son and I decided to stay for the first time in Hilo and chose the Inn at Kulaniapai Falls. We were wowed -- it is extremely beautiful, seeming a world away from Hilo, and a good value. It's comfortable and welcoming and in truly beautiful surroundings. It's hard to beat eating breakfast on the patio overlooking the private waterfall. We loved our stay and have already booked for a return next year.

The "innkeepers" are odd. Of the couple who own the property, I only met Len. He seems to be a OK enough guy, but really isn't a people person. He made an effort on my arrival, but after that, he was really hands off. He has to do the maintenance and other projects around the place. Yes, the rooms are basic. My shower head was just a strong stream of water, the sheets were old an ill-fitting (but clean), towels fine, my room (The Lehua) was small and the bathroom tiny. The morning breakfast is fine, but is unchanging as other reviewers have complained. The morning "innkeepers", especially Lea, go out of their way to chat you up in the mornings. The location is, in my opinion, far from town on a terrible road. I stayed at Emeraldview Guesthouse a few years back and it is much closer to town and much better run. This "inn" is not a B&B and should not be considered one. It is like staying at your middle-class aunt's house.
