Make sure you pay attention to the historic graffiti carved into the cave walls. This cave is worth the stop, easy access and restroom.

Lava Tubes are very dark. Always bring a spare light for back up. The black lava absorbs the light so much you think the batteries are going dead. Very slippery so make sure you go slow and use hands. If you are going to go in the back where the ceilings are low wear a baseball hat. When the visior hits it will remind you of the low ceiling before you bang your head. Becasue the wall are so dark you will not even notice there is a ceiling there until you smash your head. Rest rooms are there too.

Kaumana cave is a lava tube that you enter through a collapsed middle section. Can be slippery and narrow. You'll need a torch each as it gets dark. We explored the left hand side and went quite a way inside. Lots of fun but not if you're claustrophobic!

When you see the entrance of the lava tubes, you my think of all kinds of insects that may live in there, but because it is so dry and dark and dead (lavas) I didn´t see any. The idea that lavas run throught the tubes and resulted in a cave taller than a 2 feet man left me apprehensive and walking "in the moment", only the moment matters.

We brought one flashlight...not enough for 4 people. Everybody should have one. We were with small kids who were game to go farther but without good light and good treads on our sneakers, wasn't a good idea. But so tempting. This is v. cool to see even if you don't have the gear and just walk in a little bit. Not for the claustrophobic or anybody who has problems walking on very uneven ground. There are two caves by the way...one has higher ceilings and the other has lower ceilings but then I think/read that one gets very interesting once you get through the low part...
