Great way to learn about rock formations, volcanos and geology in a gorgeous place surrounded by a lush nature.

If you go deep in one of the caves you will find a lot of gold, silver and copper ore!
But remember to bring pants and shoes! The rocks are very sharp

Love the caves. I have a bad ankle so I was concerned about entering the caves. It wasn't a problem at all. We only went in about 100 feet though. A couple was just coming back that had gone to the end and said it was about 45 minute walk and it doesn't open up to anything. Make sure you have a flashlight with extra batteries if you plan on going in very far. It gets dark quick. Also they couldn't hear us even though they were right around the corner so make sure you check in with someone before you go in and when you come out. Great experience though!

Had the potential to be an incredible caves experience however:
1. You will need a large flashlight. Not a regular flashlight and not the one on your phone. It is pitch black, and these lights hardly cut it.
2. Wear good footwear!
3. Dress accordingly, it's cooler in the caves.
4. The site is not monitored by an attendant and there were not a lot of people there when we went. As two young women alone we were uncomfortable at the prospect of a self guided your through the caves... A local woman at the top even cautioned us from going in without a male with us.

That being said, we still had a really fun time walking into the entry of the caves, left and right, but did not go much farther. It was really a cool sight even given our limited visit!

While exploring Hilo, my wife and I decided to stop at Kaumana Caves to try and satisfy my desire of doing something completely different while in Hawaii. While we weren't properly equipped (there's only so much we can pack in our carry-ons) we managed to go far enough into the cave where we couldn't see the entrance anymore (managing with weak flashlights and cell phone lights is not ideal). Given enough time and the right gear, I could've imagined myself staying there for hours. It was a truly remarkable and geologically fascinating place to visit.
