Right away you felt as if you were staying at a place in the rainforest with the rain falling, surrounding Banyan trees, and numerous tropical birds constantly chirping. The lobby was nice to walk into however everything except the lobby lacked the Hawaiian or tropical feel of things. The rooms were generally nice and clean, but our first room was a view of the front street and not pleasant. Luckily, we were kindly given an ocean view after being moved twice. The first room change was because the TV didn't work, the second because the bed looked like it had been slept in and was not made. The ocean view room was very nice with a view of coconut island and the harbor. That brought the Hawaiian feeling back. It rained most of the time and the only pool there was a tiny outdoor pool that you would normally see at a small motel which makes sense because the property is small. It is understandable because this hotel is an older one (you can see and smell it in the hallways), but they have remodeled most of their rooms which brings it right up to the modern hotel look and feel. Overall, it was nice to stay in Hilo and be close to everything and have free parking, but there was no free internet and no welcoming feeling here with the staff.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms are pretty and peaceful

We had a two night stay in Hilo Hawaiian in Feb. It was a last minute booking. The price was a bit high, but acceptable. We were not able to get the ocean side room and our room is a little out of date.

Pros: location is great! The hotel is close to the airport. Around $14 taxi fare from airport if you don't rent a car. Perfect location for a late flight. 24 hours restaurant close by(Ken's), 15 mins walk. Breakfast buffet is good compared to nearby hotels. You will get a discount coupon from the hotel. Japanese garden and Coconut is located behind the hotel. Very beautiful place!

Cons: No convenient store close by. Pretty much everything closed after 9pm. Internet fees are expensive. You can get a free wifi in the lobby area, though very slow. We had our dinner one day. Not very good. We found one staff lady in the restaurant is very rude(everyone else is great!). Small Pool and old chairs.

The location of to this hotel is nothing short of wonderful as just about all the reviews point out.

i had been booked into one of the cheaper rooms so I didn't get a balcony or decent view, but as I was working during the day or out exploring it did not matter to me.

Checkin was efficient and friendly in a warm open and spacious lobby.

My room without a view was comfortable and very clean.

Breakfast in the restaurant was very good with lots of choice but at $23.00 quite expensive.

I did not use the restaurant or bar as the aircon was too cold for my liking.

Don't look for a sign saying Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel because the sign just says Hilo Hawaiian Hotel-we drove right past it at first. The service, room cleanliness and comfort, quiet street, scenic balcony and proximity to the Japanese garden and Coconut Island were very good but we were disappointed that the hotel lacked a "Hawaiian" ambiance that our other hotels had on other islands. The hotel has free parking which is very good but don't park in the lot to the right of the hotel entrance under the trees or your vehicle will be covered in bird poop!. Also no free internet in rooms or lobby. Beautiful banyan trees around the hotel and along the street. We were able to extend our check out time by one hour without a fee. Acceptable hotel but nothing special. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. We did discover an inexpensive 24 hour diner near by with excellent food and service (Ken's). Definitely not a fancy place but a fun place with quick service and large variety of food, including local foods.

Room Tip: Ask for renovated room facing bayside and the volcano's on a higher floor.

We stayed here for two nights and
we really liked our room. It was an ocean facing room with all the facilities. Hotel staff was very friendly specially the concierge. They allowed us to check in at 12pm, without any qualms, which is three hours prior to the normal checking time.
Location of this hotel is very good with some nice restaurants around it. And its very close to airport- just 10 min drive.

Advice- do rent a car. Cabs are very expensive. Most of the restaurants close by 9 pm.

A while back, went to Hilo and stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian. It was a very peaceful stay there. We had a great view of the bay. Parking was on site and plentiful. Staff was great!! I recommend Hilo Hawaiian.

Stayed in January 2014 for 3 nights. The staff was wonderful. They informed us of both places to eat and things to do while in Hilo. Ate breakfast at the hotel twice and all four of us had great meals which by Hawaiian standards was a good value. The room was really nice-King Size bed, separate bath and toilet area, closet. Next to Lelioukelani Gardens and Coconut Island(reached by a bridge). Waterfront with views of Mauna Kea which is spectacular during sunrise and sunset. Very affordable as well. Hilo a welcome change from touristy areas of Hawaii.

Room Tip: Oceanside rooms are worth the cost
