“Best Fresh Fish Market”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

We I first arrived in Hilo, my friends took me to an outdoor market to buy fresh fruits and veggies...we asked where we could get fresh fish and they sent us to Suisan.... WOW, best fresh fish I've had in a long time and the ahi poke was amazing... a must when you visit Hilo!

“Need to visit the Fish market”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

We decided to check out the fish market and see what they were selling in there. We chose several selections of poke and other yummy foodies that we could take on the road and snack on while checking out all the cool places on the Island. This is definitely somewhere you need to stop at to pick up great raw fish and stuff to eat on the road.

“Great Choices but...”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

My expectations of Suisan before finally visiting was great, but it all changed. Let me start with the good things first. They have tons of choices! People line up early to get fresh poke! Yes, they do get fresh fish and seafood. Location is superb, right next to the pier! Parking may get challenging, so come early. Price is awesome!

Now with things that could get better. The simple ahi poke I had seemed rushed, flavor wasn't there and surprisingly wasn't spicy at all. The Hawaiian Plate poke was too salty. Thankfully we also got the Kauai Poi to balance it all. Customer service was so-and-so. There was one who was checking out girls in the store, totally inappropriate.

My opinion might change if I get to visit again. Sorry Suisan. I know you guys are great, but I have to base my review on food and customer service. Hope to have a better experience next time.

“A true fishmarket”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

The Spicy Ahi Poke was Delicious. Definitely better than the supermarkets version of it but I can't complain about either. Most of the people eating there are locals not tourists.

Poke plate is similar to sashimi-on-rice-bowl you get in Japan, except the Poke is marinated (sayou, wasabi, sesame, etc). I think it make a lot of sense to order the Poke on-the-side because putting cold Poke on top of hot rice makes both lukewarm quickly.

I had Poke both here and in Ono Seafood in Oahu. I honest can't tell the difference between the taste of the two. Suisan (or other Big Island poke vendor like KTA and Stack'n save) do have a wider selection including the Mixed Poke and things like crab, oyster, squid or octopus.

I had the Mixed Poke which had two kind of fish and other seafood mix. I was surprise there were also two small abalones. While it was cool to have them, the abalones actually does not taste fresh.

Aside -
The Suisan is next to Suisan market, which is listed on many Tourist Guide to have fish auction Tsukiji style. It was much smaller obviously.
We arrived at 7:30am on a Tuesday and saw only one boat coming in with the fresh caught (4 to 5 foot long Ahi). Made for great picture none the less.
