We showed up right at sunset and it was beautiful to take pictures, alto there r way better places for tide pools (kapoho tide pools) and swimming (punaluu beach). These places are hole in the wall secluded type places. It was just in a shady area and was over crowded esp for it being almost dark.

“Lots of turtles. Excellent snorkeling if sunny.”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

OK. Almost every time we were in Hilo area it was overcast. But this is the place to snorkel on the Hilo side if it is sunny. Lots of turtles. Awesome black sand beaches. Restrooms. Plenty of free parking. Very close to Hilo.

“Best for sea turtle snorkeling”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

Hilo has a row of coastline parks and this is the end of the row. Its infested with large green sea turtles. We saw a dozen and they kept popping up next to us while we were snorkeling. Easy in from a small black sand beach, and sheltered from heavy surf. Lots of parking and lots of reef fish. With all there is to see on Big Island, we found time to come back here several times.

“big turtles all around”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

We loved Richardson Beach Park! We saw not one, or 2 or 3, but soooo many huge turtles, they are everywhere in the water and outside on the rocks! Just, please, as tempting as it seems, follow the law and don't get too close to scare them.
The beach is very pretty too, quiet and clean. There are a lot of snorkelling spots all around.

“Easy access, great area”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

Even though the Richardson Beacj park only have a rather small beach, it's made of black lava sand. Beautiful and plenty of places to put your towel down and just dive in snorkelling. The giant seaturtles are spotted all the time and magnificent creatures. Just be careful not to disturb hem.
