very pretty. Drink caffeine before you go and take an aspirin to avoid headache and fatigue from altitude. Very cold-wear warm clothes.

We absolutely loved this drive - and don't be intimidated by the warnings. In good weather, a 2 wheel drive car is fine - we did it in a small Ford sedan. Lots of interesting perspectives on the island and a very memorable part of our time on the Big Island.

I would suggest you make two visits here once during the day and again a night. At night the volcano glows red and you feel as if you can touch the miky way the shooting stars are brilliant.

The Volcano is a great place to visit. There is more to see than just a hole in the top of a mountain. There is a visitor center, museum, lava tube that you can walk through, a beautiful drive down the mountain to the south side of the island to a rugged shore line that is breathtaking. If you lucky you can see lava running down the mountain. Don't miss it.

The ride up the gravel road can be a little bumpy. Rental cars are not allowed. Once up top it's amazing. Make sure you bring a jacket because it's very cold.
