My husband and I stayed at Hilo Honu Inn last August. Although we had been to Hilo before on our honeymoon, we did not know about Hilo Honu and stayed at the cheap but no-frills Hilo Seaside Hotel. We were told about Hilo Honu this time by a family member who lives on The Big Island and were so thrilled to make the discovery! The owner Gaye is genuinely friendly, kind, generous and lovely. She is also an amazing cook as the photos demonstrate. For breakfast, there was plenty of coffee on hand as well as smoothies and juice! The breakfasts ranged from french toast to home-made bread pudding, and all of it was amazing. The rooms are gorgeous with interesting hand-made furniture and luxurious accommodations including a spa-like shower, super-comfy beds I did not want to get out of, and large rooms. The crickets outside made a gentle chirping lull at nighttime and the secluded area definitely add to a romantic vibe. In addition to having a great hotel experience, the owners make sure you will get the most out of your stay. In the front room there are a number of books on Hawaii from basic travel guides to very interesting books on Hawaii and lots on places to dine for a variety of income levels. The ambiance is friendly, light and comfortable, and it is a place that makes you feel like you are at home. It made the whole experience outstanding, much better than when we were doing our budget travel. Although they are not open the conventional 7 days a week, they do respond quickly by e-mail, so just make sure you make your reservation in plenty of time. We plan to return here very soon! I can't recommend this beautiful gem of a B&B highly enough!
