“Waipio Valley Trip was Excellent”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

We visited Waipio Valley today with Mike as our guide. Only me and my husband were on the trip; I was pleased they proceeded with the trip even though there were just the two of us. We were picked up on time, visited Honokaa for a short visit, and then headed down the steep path (in a vehicle) to the bottom. It was gorgeous. We really enjoyed the horses, the scenery, and the black sand beach. Mike was an excellent guide - friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. All in all, a great way to see the Waipio Valley.

“Should be on your must-do list”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

We booked a hike with Hugh after reading excellent reviews of him and his company online and in published travel guides. He was efficient, professional, and friendly in all of my communication with him before our trip and was a real pleasure to have as our guide. He took us on a private trail through gorgeous and exciting trails with an overlook into a valley some 1000 feet below. We hiked with our 10 year old who thoroughly enjoyed her swim in the waterfall. Hugh was knowledgeable, respectful, and offered us everything we needed for the hike (backpacks, water, food, rain gear, and even a make-shift change room for swimming at the falls). We would highly recommend booking a hike with Hugh; we would not have had access to the area we hiked without him nor learned as much about Hawaii's flora, fauna, or history. Thanks Hugh!

“Off the beaten path, fun and peaceful walking oasis”
Reviewed 8 June 2013

I just returned from our first visit to the Big Island with my fiancee, and his family. We only had 5-7 days to see and do all that we had intended to and 3 days where we could all do activities together. We were looking for something active, connected to nature, educational, personalised and professionally run and we found all of that and more!

Hugh, the owner of the company, was very polite and prompt in corresponding with me prior to our arrival in Hawaii. He is a gentleman with a profound amount of knowledge about Hawaii, the environment, science, nature and most of all, the custom designed trails that he leads you on. I felt like I was in the care of an- all knowing sage who spoke with intention and precision and had walked these paths so many times before.

The hike itself is not strenuous- it's about 2 miles in total on mostly flat terrain. But the views are astounding of the valley. They'll leave you struck by the beauty. Hugh also brings along delicious sandwiches which we enjoyed at a picnic dinner at a lovely waterfall cove. He even brought along fresh and delicious macadamia nuts from his neighbour's yard for us to try!! What a treat.

The nice thing about this tour is that it doesn't take the whole day, like many of the other Big Island Activities and Excursions. So you can still have the afternoon to enjoy for yourself.

Hugh is outstanding and so is this Waipio Valley Waterfalls Walking Tour.

We'll be taking the other tours offered by Hugh on our next trip back to the Big Island.

100% recommend to travellers not into large groups, being bused around and wanting to see beautiful parts of the island less trafficked.

Mahalo Hugh for a wonderful outing,
Alanna

“Secret Gem!”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

Hugh does such a great job with these hikes. We learned so much about the island, saw amazing views you can't get elsewhere, and had a great time exploring. The details say moderately strenuous but that is only because of slick rocks and uneven footing. Hugh brings everything you may need. Just bring yourself and a mindset for a bit of an adventure.

“Sooooo beautiful and sooooo much fun!!!”
Reviewed 6 February 2012

This was my second tour with Hawaiian Walkways and both times were amazing. They have access to trails that no one else has which makes the hike a truly unique experience. Hugh, our guide, has a ton of knowledge about Hawaii: folklore, history and of all the different plant species we encountered. Ask a question and he will have an answer. It was truly a pleasure spending time with him while we hiked around the rim of Waipi 'o Valley. We ate lunch at the foot of a waterfall!!!
