“great night”

We just stayed in waipio rim for one night during our honeymoon but we wish we could have been here longer. The location of this b & b is one of a kind and the views of waipio valley from the terrace (and even from the shower) are amazing.
Nancy and Steve make great breakfast with self made bread, honey, jam and eggs from their own chicken. They are very kind and thoughtful and made our stay unforgetable.
All the interior of the apartement is of a very high standard and with a nice personal touch of the owner.

The photos are beautiful but the views are even more breathtaking. This is one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen. The guesthouse has a nice Lanai that overlooks the Valley and the beach, so no need to waste time at the public overlook (that's what we did, and regretted it, but we were a bit concerned it could be grandma style B&B and didn't want to spend too much time there. Big mistake. Nancy and Steve did a fantastic job using wood to create a contemporary, light and comfortable space that fits perfectly with the surroundings. The bathroom is beautifully designed. Everything breathes high quality and style, even the china, towels and the pillows... And the banana bread pancakes with passionfruit butter, honey and local berries in the morning were addictive. We could have stayed forever.

LIke you, we read the reviews but were amazed to discover an Inn that was even more beautiful, relaxing, and special than we could have imagined. Enjoying delicious "pupu" appetizers served after a warm welcome from our hosts, we reveled in the incredible, unmatched view of Waipio Valley, fresh breezes, orchids and hibiscus, and the harmony of birds and waves. The breakfasts were superb and filling (thanks to the Inn's generous chickens), coffee piping hot and fresh, and the room impeccable and tastefully appointed. We took full advantage of insider hiking tips from Steve and enjoyed Mahi Mahi tacos in town as we toasted our 25 years of marriage. You'd be crazy to go to the Big Island and miss this gem of a place.

We were worried about missing the turnoff and our car getting stuck on the hill, but found Waipio Rim easily. The host, Steve, came out shortly after we arrived and was kind enough to help us with our luggage to the room. And what a fantastic room it was! An amazing view of Waipio valley, a beautiful garden full of birds surrounding the building, great lani to hang out, spa-like bath with more views, huge bedroom with sitting area and indoor dining area. I felt like we'd come here for a honeymoon!

Nancy and Steve are wonderful, down to earth and immediately likable. We had a great time talking to them and they were genuinely interested in finding out about who we were and what our travel plans were. Steve showed us a hidden path to a viewpoint overlooking the valley, and gave us some yummy appies before leaving us to get settled. The breakfast next morning was all local food - sweet strawberries, jam, their own honey, and Nancy piled on enough banana bread french toast that we skipped lunch. After we'd come back from our hike, Nancy came over and brought us some smoothies and more great conversation to quench our thirst. They were so tasty and refreshing, we spent the next two weeks of our trip longing for them!

I'd highly recommend Waipio Rim to anyone staying on the island. It's a quiet location with easy highway access, amazing hosts, incredible views - what more can a person want? I'll definitely be back, you've made a place in my heart in just one short stay.

We stayed at Waipio Rim in May and had an amazing time. Steve and Nancy really go out of their way to make you feel more like friends than guests- when I made a passing comment about how mosquitoes love me, Nancy instantly brought out an extra mosquito coil and an extra bottle of insect repellant, even though one was already supplied in the room. When we mentioned we might check out the trail on the rim, Steve insisted on walking us all the way up to the trailhead to make sure that we didn't get lost, gave us detailed directions, and left us one of the dogs as well. When we went on a hike into the valley, Steve and Nancy magically seemed to know when we got back and made some fresh smoothies for us. Nancy is an amazing cook- the breakfast and pupus were delicious with lots of fresh fruit from the farmer's market. When we had to leave before dawn to catch a plane on the last day, they packed us a beautiful care package. They were always available but never intrusive, and the guesthouse is a separate building so it was very private. Everything you could possibly need was thoughtfully supplied in the room, from binoculars to a small cooler. There is wifi with good signal, a small TV, and a DVD player. The view was spectacularly breathtaking, and the spot must be one of the most special and peaceful places on the planet.

A couple of comments: There is a fridge and microwave in the room (if I remember correctly, there is no freezer), so do stock up at the grocery store beforehand or get takeout if you're out for daily excursions, since you won't want to leave the place to go eat out once you get back. Also, I would not recommend this place as a base for exploring the island, but more as a relaxing place to get away. Drive times without traffic were about 2.5 hrs to Volcanoes Natl Park and 1.5 hours to the Kona Airport, and we were speeding. Although there is no way to avoid long drives on the Big Island, they might be slightly minimized by staying closer to the airport. (As a side bar, it was worth it to spend some time in the Kona area- we did the snorkeling with Manta Rays excursion with Big Island Divers, which was great. Also, we had the best burger of our lives at Annie's Island Fresh Burger- check it out, you won't regret it. That being said, the Waipio area was our favorite part of the island.)

Lastly, do realize that the Waipio Rim is a beautiful place that is surrounded by nature. As such, there were always a few ants around the bathroom area, and I did get eaten alive by mosquitoes overnight despite paranoia about keeping the screen door shut at all times (I am one of those people that mosquitoes seem to be drawn to). But this was to be expected in a natural environment and not at all a reflection of upkeep- the place was spotless, and as I said earlier, we had a mosquito coil and plenty of insect repellant in the room. Just a caveat for people who are not nature lovers.

All in all, Waipio Rim was a very special experience- it is definitely among the most charming B&Bs that we have been to, and we highly recommend it!

My wife & I stayed here for the last part of our honeymoon, and we couldn't have been happier. The view, of course, is magnificent, but the care and attention that Nancy & Steve put into ensuring your stay is a great one cannot be overstated. The food is excellent and generously portioned, and fresh coffee will be waiting for you on your private lanai each morning. Our hosts were very helpful in offering advice and helping us plan activities. Don't be fooled by the seemingly remote location, there's plenty to do.
