Owner description: Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii. This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community. We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn. A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time. Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations. This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

“Good times in the Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

My family has had some really good experiences on horseback riding excursions to downright awful/scary experiences. Because of the bad ones...makes me nervous booking horseback riding but it's something my family loves to do so took a chance. Glad we did! We first got in a special 4x4 van to go down a steep road to get to the valley floor...the views are amazing...black sand beach, little waterfalls, etc. Our main guide (unfortunately, I'm not good with names) was awesome and very entertaining. Had a great sense of humor and also shared a lot of facts about area and the entire island and did it a way that even my kids were entertained. There was a group of nine of us plus two tour guides with one always at the front of the group and one at the back. The horses were very calm and you could tell were well cared for...which after some of the experiences I've had...is a big deal. You go through a nice leisurely ride through a small river/streams, trails and are surrounded by beautiful scenery. Our group was even able to try some freshly picked mountain apples. Great location, great guides, great horses. Have some friends visiting the island in November and have already recommended this as a must do excursion.

“WOW! BEST Horse Trip in the VALLEY”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2014

Mahalo Nui Loa to Sarah & Dava whom were my horse guides in Waipio Valley by horseback; a birthday I will never forget... The guides provided us with good laughs, lots of local knowledge & history, treated the horses with the up most respect and kept everyone safe. The horses were very well tempered and cared for; they all had great spirits and it was great to see a company that valued the horses as did this ranch. From start to finish the whole trip was an adventure! From driving through RIVERS (YES, you drive through more than one river) to riding in rivers with your horse. And the backdrop; the majestic beauty of the Waipio Valley floor--well that's just indescribable, words would not do it justice. I have done the other horse trips in the valley and around and I have to say the best of the best os WHOA. A well celebrated birthday I will NEVER forget! Thank you WHOA Waipio Valley Tours... Aloha

“Awesome Place”

Waipi'o Valley is spectacular place to ride a horse. Scenic surroundings, with a peaceful stream running through the valley, birds singing, helps one to appreciate the wonders of nature.

“Good time!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

You park and meet at their headquarters (only porta potties there by the way, and bushes on the valley floors!), then get in some 4 wheel drive Toyotas to head down into the valley. We had Mika as our leader, and he was really funny and knowledgeable, since he actually lives on the valley floor. The road down wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be- you get some pretty amazing views.

The horses were tame- I hadn't been on a horse in about 10 years and was nervous, but there was nothing to be nervous about. The horses know what they are doing. You go through some rivers/creeks, and you may trot a few times. The scenery is very beautiful, and you get some photo opps. It was a great activity to do if you didn't have time to actually hike down into the valley.
