“Not just your ordinary fast food place.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2013 via mobile

The moment you step inside, you will see signs that say to try their famous malsadas; listen to the signs! They were hot, well filled, and just plain good! Even better, is that you can sit around a window, eat, and watch them actually make the malsadas from scratch.

The food is equally good, and reasonably priced. Burgers are served on buns a few levels higher than your ordinary fast food place, and he flavor was all there. Friend had teriyaki beef sandwich, and raved about it!

Just note that you can easily miss the restaurant from the road (main road, or the side street you actually enter from), as the restaurant is in the back part of the building, and the sign sits up at the main road. As this writing (mid-November '13), there was some construction going on in the front of the building, and there's no obvious signs.

“Great Malasadas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2013

Always stop here for some coffee and delicious Portuguese doughnuts (malasadas). Best on the Big Island.

“Awesome food, great value”

Splitting a plate here is a great idea because they are huge! Great place to stop after seeing the waipio valley overlook. Do NOT miss the malasadas. They are worth the gluten and sugar overload.

“The Tasty Gems of Honokaa,,,,Malasadas......YUM!!!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2013

When we arrived at our hotel in Wailoloa we were greeted warmly and our doorman asked if he could be of service. We went back to him later in the day to see what information we could get from him....he gave us driving information to the area north of our resort which was his home area......we learned about his favorite sweet...the best on the island....Malasadas.....a light dough type doujghnut filled with jellies and custards.....he said Tex Drive-in made the best....we travelled there a few days later and found the drive-in in what looks like a small industrial park. There is a sign on Route 19 but not so easy either...the drive-in is near all the schools in the town so watch for school markers or better....ask the locals.....we got 6 with different fillings....took them with us and had one a day till gone.....Yum...they kept well in the refrigerator and we gently warmed them in microwave and they were delicious.....the drive-in serves other foods but we took care of our mission for the Malasadas......don't miss a chance to try them...and the price is right too!!!!!!

“Tasty treats”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2013

We timed our trip from Kona to Hilo so we could stop for a morning treat at Tex's for malasadas -- a filled large donut-like treat. Within our group, we tried fillings of chocolate, bavarian cream and apple. All were tasty. good value at only about $1.50 each - recommend eating them while they are hot. You can even see them making them through a window.
