The Villa
I don't enjoy writing negative posts so when I have to ...I dont intend to go into the detail. Suffice to say ...the owners of this property are doing themselves and their property a diservice. It has so much potential but the broken, tired (battered!) appearance of most of the furniture, linen and kitchen crockery and utensils lets it down. Most of the towels we were provided were threadbare ....proving completely useless when you were wet! They had a damp smell to them and despite putting everything in the wash on day 2 ....we discovered it was actually the washing machine that had this damp, mouldy smell so we stood no chance. The fridge was packed with previous guests condiments .... the entire door in fact .... so chockablock that even if you were brave enough to venture into one of the bottles (how old?!?!?) ...you'd struggle to pull it out. The crockery was mismatched, chipped and don't even get me started on the frustration of trying to find a knife that would cut.

Fortunately we checked the gas level for the BBQ on arrival before the cleaner departed ....it was empty. We managed to get a replacement two days later.

The Resort
Reading these reviews its obvious that there are some pretty stunning villas and we just had the bad luck of booking a poor one. So ...assuming you've secured yourself one of the better villas then this resort will make a good vacation. There are only two negatives for us ....which I think are more a personal preference so might not bother you :

(1) You need a car to get everywhere. We like being car-free on vacation so were a little dissapointed to see that we needed to drive to the beach, the shop, the coffee shop ....everywhere. The reading material says there are footpaths ...we tried this one day and called our friends to collect us at the end point because we were so exhausted and sun exposed. The paths are rocky and exposed .... we landed up using the road in the end as it was more direct and easier for walking.

(2) A number of the villas have terraces to the rear overlooking the golf courses and lava field ...sounds nice but they're actually quite dark and windy. We never seemed to enjoy sitting on the terrace as it was too cool ...which might be good on a searing hot day but as we were experiencing normal Hawaiin temps .... this would not be ideal. In hindsight we would look for a villa that had ocean or garden views next time.

We rented the Pineapple Villa in Golf Villas building K through vrbo.com/302993. The condo was infested with roaches. As the days went on it just kept getting worse and worse. Even our rental car got infested as the roaches moved from the condo to the garage. They knew about the problem because there were roach traps everywhere. Advised owner and manager, they offered us 3 free days in the future and never gave any sort of refund on the over $1800 we spent renting their condo. Unbelievable, we would never set foot in that place again. The only positives were the beautiful swimming pool at the condo complex and ocean beach club. Other than that It was the worst vacation we ever spent on the island.

It is so unfortunate this condo was such a disappointment.

We stayed for a week in January. The listing pictures and other reviews are correct, the place was immaculate, clean and rich in amenities. Service is fantastic prior to and after arrival - all involved were extremely helpful. Access to the Mauna Lani Beach club (great snorkeling and a great beachclub restaurant) - owner even provided use of great beach towels, miles of shoreline trails, a great pool, and superb location near many highly rated beaches and resort hotels offer great advantages to the Mauna Lani location. The home itself provides a fantastic kitchen well stocked with all the needed utensils and appliances. the outdoor kitchen with a view of the golf course offers excellent outdoor dining opportunities. Wifi and cable, a nearby grocery store offering all of the needed supplies 6am to 11 pm and use of a washer and dryer. We hated to leave and plan on returning to I-3 when we get back to Hawaii !! - you can check out the great photos of the unit, beach club etc. at http://www.vrbo.com/331653

Room Tip: I-3 is awesome - outdoor kitchen overlooks the golfcourse and offers great privacy. You get access...

We had a great time at the Golf Villas. My family of four (6 and 10 yr. old) stayed at J1, a 2 bedroom condo and could not be happier. This was our third time on the Big Island; the first two we stayed at the Palm Villas. Although the Golf Villas lacked the interesting lava cave-lined path to the beach, we found that it was way quieter and the people more family friendly. We loved the beach club and spent many lazy days there. On our first two days, there was a pod of dolphins that hung around just at the ocean break. I rented a stand-up paddle board and we watched the dolphins jump out and play tricks.
The snorkeling at this beach is unparalleled, even comparing it to the Place of Refuge, which is suppose to be spectacular. What I love is how we can walk from the club through ancient fish ponds toward the Mauna Lani Resort where lots of lots of giant sea turtles laze about in the sun.
The beach club restaurant changed owners and it's a bit pricey. Better to buy your lunch at Foodland and bring it down. Oh and make sure to come early in the morning so you can get a cabana seat or beach chairs. If you come later, you'll just have to sit on the sand or the grass, which is okay too if you don't mind that.
We have booked our Hawaii (Maui and BI) condos through www.vrbo.com and have always been pleased. Make sure to pay only by credit card and seek liberal refund policy. One year we had our trip cancelled due to a snow storm but the condo owner gladly credited us the unused days for a March trip we took the following year.

we usually stay at hotels but since we have the entire family, we decided to rent a villa at Mauna Lani golf villas. I can honestly say that this was the most relaxing vacation that I've ever been on! we stayed at C2-it's 3 br 3 baths so everyone gets their own room. Upgraded kitchen, large lanai for dining (plus grill), and spectacular view of golf course. Oh there''s also a den with 2 desk and free internet. The owners Rick & Kim provided lots of 'extras' for their guests to use: children's books, dvds, toys. And for adults: dvd, books, 2 bikes, snorkel gear and much more. There's a fitness room and pool but we never used it.

The entire Mauna lani area is quiet and upscale-I like the fact that you don't bump into many people so you really feel like you're getting away from it all. The use of teh private beach club is awesome too. Calm water, grat for kids and snorkeling.

I can't wait to go back to BI and stay at C2 at Mauna Lani. Totally recommend it!

we rented townhouse C2 direct from the owners on VRBO and could not have been happier. The house was beautiful, clean, comfy, big screen and several flat screens. All the accessories we could have needed. The owners were great, very helpful and very easy to deal with. My husband and I had our own room with cal-king bed, our teenage son had his own room. Use and parking at the private beach club-which is probably one of the best places to snorkel and relax anywhere in the islands. I don't see us ever staying in a hotel again when we can have so much room to spread out for less than what we would pay for one room at a hotel.

Found the condo #O23 on VRBO. We were looking for 3 BR in the Mauna Lani area, and wanted to use the Beach Club. The 3rd BR is actually a loft, but was fine. The nightly price was good, but the cleaning fee ($199) was a lot for 3 nights! There were a couple surprises with the condo. First, it is all upstairs, and the lanai is small and doesn't have a BBQ like most of them do. However, the public BBQ is across the street near the pool, so it wasn't really a problem-just not what I expected. There were only 4 beach towels for 6 of us, and a few beach toys/chairs in the garage for use. The condo was beautifully decorated, and we enjoyed our stay there. The kitchen had some spices and condiments left by others, which was handy. The snorkeling at the Beach Club was fabulous! It was nice to be able to get drinks or food right there also. Foodland at the Shops at Mauna Lani was very convenient for groceries, and not too expensive. This is a very dark, quiet area, and the stars at night are amazing!
