We stopped in for lunch and were happy not to have to wait for a table. I had fish tacos and he had the pulled pork sandwich. Everything is local and delicious. The prices were great too for Hawaii.

We had reserved a table for noon as part of our drive along the coast to Hawi and then back via Waimea to Kona. The drive took longer than Google maps had advised so we rang from the Living Arts Gallery in Hawi (well worth a visit) to advise that we would be late for our lunch. When we arrived at almost 12.45, the place was packed but our lovely table overlooking the garden with a breeze through the window was there waiting for us. The greeter and our waitress gave us a friendly welcome and we ordered our cocktails - a martini for me and a "mobeeto" for her; an unusual purple concoction which she particularly enjoyed. We also ordered a glass of the Buehler chardonnay and a bottle of the Bussola Tommasso valpolicella.
Our appetizers were a perfect start to the meal - heirloom beets, tomato, asparagus, goat cheese, macadamia nuts and quinoa. She had added local beef to hers and I had added lightly grilled ono (both perfectly cooked).
We were about halfway through these when our waitress appeared with our entrees and said "ready for more food ?". Well, obviously we weren't and so she took them back to the kitchen where (my wife mentioned) there appeared to be a bit of consternation. Given that this was the third time on the Big Island that entrees had arrived very shortly after the appetizers had been delivered, we were beginning to wonder if this was a regular practice. On her return to our table, we asked our waitress if it was something we were doing wrong or if it was a Big Island thing and she advised that the kitchen always starts cooking the entrees as soon as the appetizers have gone out ! She also suggested that, in future it might help if, when ordering, we advise that we want a bit of a wait between courses. With only 10 minutes to wolf down an appetizer before the entree hits the table, I'd say it would be essential to ask for a gap. It would also save the restaurant some money because they had to cook our entrees over from scratch. And, like our appetizers, they were really good. She had the fresh island fish with a light salad and I had the Kalua pork and cabbage. As a very nice surprise, they later brought out a lovely crispy molten chocolate purse for us to share in recognition of our 39th wedding anniversary.
we weren't the last to arrive but the place was empty except for us by just after 1.30pm and the staff were already laying the tables for dinner. We were told to take our time but we were out the door by 2.00. We noticed on the door that the hours for lunch are 11.30 to 1.30. Seemed odd to us but, judging by the crowd there, those hours aren't restricting business.
This is a comfortable restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, great food and a wine list that would be the envy of many restaurants. In my opinion, the food prices are very low given the quality of meals served. The bill came to $174 including $106 for drinks.

It's not near the water, in fact it is inland and sometimes chilly. But, I always ask to sit by the window so I can feel the cool breezes. Merriman's uses local ingredients as much as possible and prepares the food with creativity and taste in mind. The lamb is always superb - regardless of the preparation.
Wonderful wine list too. Wine flights are also available so that you can try different wines that you might not otherwise consider.
This is a stop for us each time we visit the Big Island, which is at least 3 times a year.

Had eaten at a couple other Merriman's restaurants in Hawaii but this was our first visit to the one in Waimea. It was a bit of a drive from our hotel on the coast, but beautiful scenery and well worth the drive. The restaurant is lovely inside. We dined with two other couples and had a nice round table so we could all talk and enjoy the evening. Dinners were spectacular. The meats and fish were cooked to perfection. Had a great recommendation on the wine and desserts...Yum!! Our waitress was knowledgeable, friendly and not intrusive. Will definitely be back and recommend to friends visiting the area.

For foodies like us, this is the place to go on the Big Island! We really enjoyed our experience at Merriman's. Our waitress, Ihi Lani, was knowledgeable and efficient. She helped us select our items and navigate their menu. We loved the fact you could select two to three different items on the menu to create your own plates. Our
table ordered the Filet, Lobsters,Mahi and the Hawaiian Hog. All of the entrees were delicious. The cocktails were great and order the Maui Gold Pineapple and Toasted Macadamia Nut Brioche Pain Perdu for dessert- you won't be disappointed.
