“Great Spot”

What a great little beach to walk and relax. The park is very nice with lots of picnic tables and facilities for changing. There isn't any place to purchase food or drinks, so make sure to pack your own.

“Spencer Beach Camping”
Reviewed 15 February 2014 via mobile

Because we were travelling/camping in our rented VW bus, we had to stay in the parking lot which sounds uncomfortable but worked out very well. We stayed 2 nights under the shelter of a big tree where we had a fine view and easy access to the showers. We felt secure and enjoyed talking to our camping neighbours. The camp attendant, Paul, was professional and helpful. A lovely park, good facilities, clean, and well-managed. Definitely on our list for a return visit.

“Simple/Easy Safe Sandy Beach/Camping Area With Full Facilities”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

Spencer Beach is less than an hour's drive North of Kailua-Kona and offers everything visitors (and locals) typically want in a beachside setting; immediate access to a safe/sandy beach area, full facilities including flush toilets, showers, BBQs, change areas, fenced off play area, lots of picnic tables with shade trees, and loads of free parking. The beach is central to the park (so, it's easy to keep an eye on the kids). The beach has a very gentle approach into the water, perfect for young children. There is "reasonable" snorkelling to the South and North of this beach 'though of all the times I've snorkelled there, the water clarity has not been all that great, but still okay to enjoy the reef fish. Next door, to the North is a short trail that leads to the bay in front of a national heritage site called "Pu'ukohola Heiau" where they offer a self-guided tour over paved walkways and a very interesting staffed visitor centre. There are campsite areas on the North & South ends of the beach (what an awesome outlook to wake-up to in the morning and enjoy in the evening/nighttime before bed!) with a seperate central large covered communal pavilion to enjoy a covered sit down meal out of the rain, with numerous kitchen wash-up sinks for dishes and power outlets (for cell phones or laptops...?) and more restroom facilities. The bay to the North, in front of Pu'ukohola Heiau was an area where apparently human sacrifices were made and is said to be visited by sharks on occasion (hence the reason to throw Hawaiian sacrifices in), 'though I have never personally seen any sharks during my numerous times in the water there, locals still insist they often "cruise" the bay (just to be safe, maybe only send in ex-wives, ex-husbands or family members you aren't fond of...?) Regardless, Spencer Beach is one of those typical "reason we come here" Big Island beaches with full facilities. Enjoy

“Safe, easy, fun”
Reviewed 13 January 2014 via mobile

Spencer is about 30 mins north of the airport. Good facilities, showers, picnic benches, sandy beach, small park. Water is normally fairly calm, great place to take kids or people starting to snorkel. Locals normally go to the right, tourists left but mingle and have fun.

“Excellent, easy snorkeling at Spencer Beach!”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

Spencer Beach is the perfect place to take children who are beginners at snorkeling. The shore isn't all smooth sand, but that's not why we were there. When we first got to the airport, a family who was leaving suggested we take our kids to Spencer Beach because of the easy snorkeling. I am so glad we took their advice. When we went into the water, we hardly went out at all and already there was so much to see! There is beautiful coral and tons of fish to see with very little effort. I didn't have to worry about swimming very far out to see plenty under the water. My son was only 7 years old and had no trouble keeping up. Everything we were seeing was pretty close under the surface, so we could see very clearly. If you like to snorkel and you have young children, Spencer Beach is the best place to go.
