“So Relaxing and Quiet!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2009

If there is any bad reviews on this place, don't listen to them! We looked at the reviews when we booked and thought..OK?!! But this is the most relaxing place to stay! Has very clean rooms that are fresh and relaxing. We did'nt have time to go in the swimming pool, but they had just cleaned it and do every week!! We went in the hot tub and it was very nice and hot! The most amazing view of the ocean from your bed when you wake up! The only complaint I would have is that you would have to heat up the breakfast because it was cold. The house keeper would drop it off since she had to do some work. The fruit was very tasy since it was fresh. She has cute little coconut trees and grows fruit! She also has boogie boards, floaties, chairs, umbrellas, and beach towels in each room she let us borrow for the day! Very quiet also!

We stayed at Makai Hale in October 2008. We had a wonderful time there and we definitely hope to return in the future. The location and view were so beautiful! We loved sitting out on our lanai in the mornings to eat our breakfast. Audrey brought a delicious breakfast each morning to our rooms which included fresh fruit and an entree. The area in which the bed and breåkfast is located is a beautiful, very private gated community. You felt away from the city but you were close to Kona, Kamuela, and the activities on the north part of the island. I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast. It was the best one we have ever stayed at. The rooms were well-decorated in a Hawåiian motif and were very comfortable ånd clean. The pool and jacuzzi area was very nice and Audrey and Jerry gave us complete privacy. You need to visit this bed and breakfast if you are visiting on the Kona side of the Big Island.

Located on a hill on the Kona side of the Big Island (Hawaii) with an incredible "180" view of the ocean (as far as the eye can see), peaceful, private. Hot tub, swimming pool, 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms. About 1/2 hr north of Kona airport. Delicious breakfast always includes fresh fruit. TV (Dish) in both rooms. Restaurants and shopping areas close by. Very reasonable rates. We'll be returning at least once a year. Renewing... a genuine vacation.

The review above is extremely accurate about Makai Hale. Its beautiful and peaceful. There is an amazing panoramic view of the ocean from the room. The breakfast is delicious. The rooms are immaculate. The most beautiful beaches are just a few minutes away. I definitely reccommend Makai Hale to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

My husband and I stayed in the cottage during our honeymoon and it was very cozy. I liked how it was far away from everything and nestled in the trees of the Volcano Village. The rooms are well cared for and the caretaker supplied the room with adequate food. Clean and a great place for honeymooners or couples visiting the volcano. Only fault, bedroom could use some updating in decoration. Main room (living room/kitchen) was nice.

Stayed at the Makai Hale for a week on our honeymoon in October of 2004. We were in Honolulu for five days before which was great but not very relaxing, it was like any other city. After the stress of planning a wedding, Makai Hale was the perfect place to be.

The hosts are Audrey and Jerry Maluo. I actually never saw Jerry during our time there but Audrey was a gracious host. She knew the right balance between being obsequious and nonexistant. The breakfasts that she left every day in the foyer of our room were delicious. The basket on snacks on the table was always full with treats such as chocolate covered macadamia nuts.

As for the place itself, their home is in a gated community that was a former ranch. The big island is very diverse geographically, we were on the dry side surrounded by hardened lava and dry brush. We stayed in a immaculate two bedroom, two bath guest house about twenty feet away from the main house. Our bedroom overlooked the ocean which was a wonderful way to wake up every monring. The peacefulness is overwhelming, although it takes very little time to get used to it. There is a pool which was all ours since the Maluo's only have one couple or family at a time and they never went in it while we were there. There is a also a jacuzzi as well for your pleasure. I really don't want to give too many details because it has to be experienced first hand for the full effect. I promise that most people will not be disappointed.

The location is good, about a five minute drive to the nearest shopping center. Kona is a thirty minute drive and Waimea up in the mountains is 20 minutes away. Hapuna Beach, which I believe was voted the most beautiful beach in Hawaii, is less than ten minutes away. If you are looking for the full resort experience then this is not the place for you. If you are looking to relax and unwind after the stress of a wedding or any stress, then this is truly paradise and we highly recommend it.
