We rented the cottage at the back as our first stop in Hawaii after a long flight out from the UK. Mary met us after 9pm when we arrived and made us very welcome. The cottage was the perfect choice, allowing us not to worry about disturbing other guests when waking up in the middle of the night as we got used to the time difference.
The sunrises were lovely, with an easy walk (40 yds) to the coast, and Pat and Mary were excellent, attentive (but not in your face) hosts with different, fresh breakfasts each morning. We'd thoroughly recommend staying here to anyone.
The only minor downside was the noisy frogs at night in this region of the Big Island (earplugs provided which worked fine).
The east around Hilo is the rainforest part of the Big Island so, guess what, it did rain. However, this was almost exclusively at night and didn't impact our vacation at all. It helped take the edge off the heat and is part and parcel of why the Big Island of Hawaii is so fascinating, watching nature very quickly recover and overgrow the various lava flows..More
