Eco Retreat Hawaii

You might imagine being the first ever guest anywhere could be...awkward. Well not the case for Eco Hostel Hawaii! As their first official guest, I had the pleasure of staying in new accommodations, going on their tours and talking shop about the future of the hostel with the team throughout my stay. Since I love all things eco-tourism, it was a treat to be taken to the hidden coves of the Big Island, while talking about tours and plans for their future guests. I felt a part of their family, even though my stay was only for a few days. I would highly recommend this hostel for people wanting an immersion in nature. It was especially good for 20 something females traveling sola (as was the case with me). I had instant buddies who knew how to crack jokes, and who cared about the environment around them. I recommend not only staying there, but taking advantage of all their tours. They rocked me to new heights of hiking, island culture and sightseeing. Also... they will listen to all the Ja-waiian music you want.

i have had a wonderful time here, and seeing a bit of the area. i stayed in a tent under a canopy, a bit away from the communal area. derek, one of the owners, truly goes above and beyond for guests. as it was my first trip to big island (which is quite distinct from other islands), i was originally unsure if i would spend 4 nights here, but after the first day, i knew i wanted to. everyone here is quite friendly, and we've had some interesting discussions. i have also learned more about sustainable living which has been something of interest to me! mahalo!

I stayed there right at the start, before they even had dorms, or any of the other awesome accomodations i see popping up on their facebook page weekly or monthly. i could enjoy my stay with just the weather alone, but the owners/operators made it even more enjoyable by giving me the best stay possible. They showed me tons of spots in a small amount of time that seemed like only the locals would have known about it; shared awesome stories and conversations; by far, one of the best trips i've had in a long time...can't wait to go back!

I spent 3 great nights at the Eco Hostel Hawaii. All people there (owners, workers and guests were really nice people with positive energy). It is really and Ecological place, where you can sleep in their tent (with a really nice folding mattress) in the middle of the forest, no lights, just stars and insect noises like crickets and cicadas. There is wireless internet in the common area where the restroom and the shower are (awesome hot shower!) and the kitchen. When I was there, the kitchen was still temporary but they are building a common area with a really nice kitchen and are starting to grow their own food. The owners will organize tours so you get to know all the good spots in the Hilo area, including the active volcano crater, walking on dried lava to get to see flowing lava during a spectacular sunset by the ocean, Tai ponds, warm ponds, snorkeling spots, lava trees, and more!

Room Tip: When I was there, there weren't any rooms for rent, except for tents. My tent was better than a...

My wife and I came to Hawaii looking for something different.....we wanted to be more in nature and off the grid than staying at a regular touristy hotel.....we had a wonderful time. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable.....they took us to some of the most amazing places in Hawaii, off the beaten path......

eco hostel hawaii has been a wonderful, extraordinary experience. with beautiful lush surroundings and all the amenities to make a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. it's a friendly, welcoming staff, who are always willing to share info, and make for great tour guides. the lava was AWESOME! i think what sets this place apart from any other hostel on the island, is that you can tell these folks are genuinely interested in creating a truly ecologically conscious, sustainable environment, and want to share with you all the island has to offer. they do it right and keep it real. thanks for everything y'all.

Room Tip: i chose a sheltered campsite with a great view and felt right at home. the yurts are pretty sweet to...
