“Sad nature trail”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

The nature trail is poorly maintained and plant signs poorly displayed, for the one's that are alive. However, a Great Restroom stop on the way to the Volcanos.

“A challenging nature trail”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

My copy of "Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed" indicated that the nature trail at Manuka Park was a mostly easy and interesting trek. While it was interesting in terms of seeing a lot of Hawaiian specific plants, it was a fairly arduous hike. It's over 2 miles long and most of it is on lava rocks (many of which are baseball-sized and on varying elevations). There are a few downed trees and logs. Definitely wear good hiking shoes and maybe even bring a walking stick. While my dad and I were not trying to set any records, the hike took about an hour. There aren't a ton of truly incredible sights on the tour (there is a big pit crater about a third of the way through the trail, which is a nice place to stop and stare at a huge rocky cave in the ground) but it can be nice to immerse yourself in a Hawaiian jungle without worrying about getting lost or encountering truly wild terrain. There is also a rocky little area under a thicker canopy of trees about halfway through the trail where some people stopped to eat a picnic lunch. I didn't see any animals (including birds or insects) during my hike but maybe at a different time of year, you could see some native Hawaiian wildlife, like geckos or chameleons.

There was no park staff of any kind that I saw (we went on a Friday) and thus, no admission or parking fee was required. There are some picnic tables (all covered) and restrooms at the entrance to the trail, though the men's restrooms are very bare bones.

“Great little hiking place”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

I like the hike because it is a loop, much better than going up, then back. We take our dogs there also, great excersize area, cool elevation, but bring some water.

“Manuka State Park”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

Manuka State Park is good place for a break. There are Restrooms available and even a BBQ. In addition a short trail (2 Miles) can be done. The trail leads throgh the forest behind the Wayside area and takes about 45 minutes to 1h. It´s very stony so good shoes are recommended. On the trail itself important Plants are marked and named. In the middle of the trail is a small rest area with the possibility to seat (no restrooms or water).
