Reviewed 29 April 2010

We were greeted by very friendly, welcoming and gracious hosts. All the rooms were spotless and everyone was raving about the breakfasts.

My husband and I were absolutely amazed at the level of service offered at Kalaekilohana! The accommodations were immaculate and spacious. Our private suite included more space and extras that we needed (daybed, and walk in rain shower). However, we were also allowed use of the rest of the grand house, including the giant lanai in the front. I even did a load of laundry after our rainy, sandy days spent in Volcano Natl. Park and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach.

Our hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful, too. They shared their personal experiences and insight on the Big Island to help us plan out a perfect itinerary. They suggested the best places to eat, including their favorite Big Island Luau. In fact, when I brought home (yes, it actually felt like home in Hawaii) dessert from dinner, they insisted on plating my Macadamia Nut Cream Pie with linen napkin and silverware. To top of the evening, my husband and I were offered evening cocktails catered to our exact tastes and felt perfectly welcome and comfortable enjoying a night cap on the lanai under the Southern sky with our gracious hosts.

The location is very convenient to Volcano Natl. Park, Black Sand Beach, South Point, and Mahana Bay's Green Sand Beach. If you are planning on visiting the Green Sand Beach, it's a must to stay here. The location allows you to get the the beach before anyone else, after a spectacular breakfast. Really, on both counts. Kalaekilohana also provides a perfect audio tour for the morning journey heading to South Point and Green Sand Beach.

The only downside is that the service was so terrific, I don't think there will be another future Bed and Breakfast we will ever enjoy as much. We cannot wait to visit Kalaekilohana again. I'm sure we will plan our next trip to allow us to stay at their location longer. It truly was one of the highlights of our Big Island visit. As the name states, it really is "The Best of Ka Lae (South Point)".

Mahalo Plenty, K&K!!

We stayed at Kalaekilohana for 3 nights and would highly recommend it. We spent part of our vacation traveling around the Big island, including 3 nights in South Point. South Point is somewhat remote but there were plenty of things to keep us busy for 3 days. The property is beautiful, the rooms are very large, comfortable and well-appoinrted and the bathrooms are huge. There is a large wrap around porch where we spent the evenings drinking wine and watching narture - very relaxing. The breakfast was first-rate, ample food and the menu varied each morning. Kenny and Kilohana are outstanding hosts - we were truly pampered in style.

Hawaiian hospitality to the max. Spent my birthday weekend with Mom and sister. The aloha started with the gracious greeting upon our arrival and continued to the last moment with waves from the front porch until we exited the property. Mom was so relaxed she just wanted to sleep! When we brought sandwich fixings (peanut butter and jelly) home for a lite dinner after a large lunch at auntie's house, our hosts brought out the coffee, tea, silverware, cloth napkins and dishes. The gourmet breakfasts were so good we had to take pictures! Our hosts granted every request including serving Mom pancakes and making waffles for us. Also enjoyed walking the property and checking out the native plants.
The restful, beautiful setting inspired artwork, brought back memories of our gramma's home and made us feel part of the ohana.
Mahalo nui loa to Kilohana and Kenny. Hope to return someday.

When I pulled up the long grassy drive to Kalaekilohana, I knew I had chosen wisely. The plantation style home, painstakingly built by the hosts, beckons warmly, sitting atop a hill lined with windswept Norfolk pines. The home and the rooms are beautiful, but the best part of Kalaekilohana is its wonderful hosts, Kilohana and Kenny. Kilohana peacefully exudes Hawaiian culture and teaches language, traditional lei making and weaving and other cultural gems to his guests. Kenny was also warm and welcoming as well as very formidable in the kitchen. Both of our hosts offered us wonderful advice for exploring Ka'u, including their adorable CD, which narrates the drive down South Point Road to Ka Lae, addressing the local sacred sites and the history of the area.

The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and the bathrooms were luxurious -- walk-in shower, well stocked and with so many towel options, one should be ashamed to use them all. Breakfast was amazing - Kenny used the word local nearly 15 times, and everything was (as one might expect) delicious and bursting with flavor.

This was a wonderful base for exploring Ka'u -- highly recommend for the wonderful accommodations and wonderful company. My only regret here was not staying longer.

Stayed for 3 nights from Dec.31 2009 -Jan.4 2010
Party(on House)held on New Year Eve was thoughtful indeed.
Room was clean and spacious.
What we liked above all was the distance between the owners and us. Friendly indeed but not too close.
We really like here and certainly come back with our grand daughter next time.

Get away from the typical tourist track and enjoy this peaceful and welcoming home in a very special area of Hawaii Island. I especially enjoyed the green sand beach; being nearby allowed us to get an early start and have the beach completely to ourselves all morning - what a great experience.
