“The Best Spiritual Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

Our family, has always traveled for vacations and we've gone to Hawaii many times. Our trip to the big Island has remained our most memorable and enjoyable vacation largely due to our stay at the Wood Valley Temple and Retreat. Set on magnificent tropical acreage,The Temple is simply beautiful and quaintly grand. The Guesthouse has spacious rooms and a wonderful communal kitchen. We were able to participate in daily services with the resident Lama and easily spend the day exploring both the black and white sand local beaches for great snorkeling and fun. The Volcano park was also easily accessible and we had the adventure of experiencing the lava flow across the mountain up close and personal. Our children were welcomed into the services and given instruction and when not attending with us, were totally safe exploring the beautiful countryside. Miguel and Marya, who own and operate the Temple Retreat, are fabulous hosts and provide the perfect balance of giving you total freedom and being amazingly informative and helpful with both practice and meditation (as well as local sights and adventures), and allowing you space and privacy. There were other families and couples who stayed briefly as well and that added to the experience. f you're going to Hawaii and looking for a wonderful meditative retreat which also offers all the beautiful aspects of adventure in Hawaii at your fingertips this is absolutely the place to stay.

Wood Valley Temple is not a beach resort complete with white sand, snack bars, and crowded restaurants. However, if you are craving a peaceful and meditative setting with comfortable rooms (no TV), a spacious guest house with a large fully stocked communal kitchen and screened in dining room, Wood Valley might just be what you are looking for. There are hiking trails close by, and special beaches if you are adventurous and don't mind a half hour-40 minute drive. The Wood Temple itself, has interesting guests who are also seeking a quiet and meditative experience. Located on spacious grounds and graced by a few beautiful peacocks roaming the area, the temple is available to visit with daily meditation led by the lama if you desire. The Volcano National Park is located just 22 miles away with good restarants if you desire. Weather can be overcast and showery. Not too hot or cool with breezy conditions.

Room Tip: We like the Japanese room on the 2nd floor across from bathroom with shower.Very comfortable bed.

My wife Jenny and I and our young adult kids Jim and Amber made a round of the Big Island, after working there a half year and hearing lots of good about Wood Valley Temple.
It's all true; really a deeply restitutive vibe, the chance to chant and meditate with the Lama twice daily, a really good kitchen to use, and we were very happy with the quality of the other world-traveler guests.
This is not a resort. This is the real deep immersion.
Nice walks and bike riding, too. Jim and I rode to Wood Valley from Captain Cook, and after a few days stay, we rode on to Volcano, both nice rides, quite different scenery and mellow roads.

Room Tip: When you call, just explain your preferences. Super helpful people.

This is a true treasure, far from the touristy scene, yet a relatively short drive to very special beaches and Kilauea. A place where time slows down and abundant natural beauty relaxes and invigorates. A very special place for quiet time and contemplation.

Our family recently stayed at the Wood Valley Temple and enjoyed every minute. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The communal kitchen/eating area and living space are wonderful places to hang out. We enjoyed following the peacocks around the property and watching them explore. The morning prayers are an added bonus for anyone interested in experiencing a Tibetan Buddhist puja. The people who run the Wood Valley Temple are lovely! They are helpful and kind and will do whatever they can to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

An added bonus is that while staying there, we met some other wonderful people and had a chance to explore Punalu'u Beach, which is nearby.

I've stayed at this wonderful place for 5 days at the end of January 2013. After reading Lonely Planet book on Big Island and "David and B" review on Tripadvisor (very accurate), it was exactly what I was looking for after a 10 days silent retreat around Pahoa. Not only the location is beautiful and peaceful, I had the privilege to meet very nice people who lives on the premises: the hosts Marya and Miguel and a Tibetan monk Dapala. Great environment for writers, people who needs a quiet place for a creative group projects or workshops, meditation. The kitchen and dining room, with screened windows, allows small group gatherings or a family weekend reunion. I also enjoyed observing the peacocks and other birds, star and moon gazing. It was one of my highlights during my month and half in Hawaii. I wish Wood Valley Temple would be a short drive away instead of up to 24hrs traveling time to get there!

The retreat center is the most relaxing place in the islands. Accommodations are comfortable, with tropcial, Asian themes in the rooms. We fixed lovely meals in the kitchen. We've traveled world wide and have returned here year after year to enjoy this magical place, bringing our children who now as adults return on their own to visit. Easy drive to Volanco National Park and down to the shore. This is a piece of old Hawai'i that few get to experience in this congested age in other parts of the islands. It's an hour to Hilo and an hour and half to the bustle of Kona. As empty nesters on our last trip we explored it all from hour base at the temple retreat.

Room Tip: The downstair queen bed in the India room is very comfortable! Two baths just across the hall.

Located in the Ka'u District, the spiritual heart of Hawai'i on the Big Island, Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling (Small Immutable Island of Melodious Sound) is known locally as Wood Valley Temple. It's Retreat Center and Guest House is a wonderful, peaceful place to stay for contemplation, meditation and self discovery; and is a warm home base to explore the island. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has stayed and taught here twice; as have over fifty distinguished lamas of all the major Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Framed by a pristine rainforest and beautiful landscaped grounds, the Retreat Center and Guest House is a quiet sanctuary for rest and reflection. It accommodates up fifteen (15) guests or small groups comfortably in private and shared rooms. There is a large room for group events, plus a screened kitchen, dining room and veranda gives views of the garden and koi fish pond. Programs that have taken place here include Vipassana, massage, permaculture, yoga and meditation. The main temple was built in 1902 by Japanese immigrants who worked in the local sugar plantation. Numberless people from all over the world have visited here. Nechung in Wood Valley truly offers a memorable and unique experience. ... more   less
