“A great place to stay for peace, nature and relaxation”
Reviewed 5 May 2012

We just spent a week in a two bedroom condo here with friends. The place is very well kept, has a golf course that is very reasonable, a nice pool, BBQs and hot tub. A great place to relax and or golf and it is about 1 hour to either Kona or Hilo. Lots to see and visit all over the big island of Hawaii. As always the people on the island were wonderful and go out of their way to help you have a great time and be comfortable. If you want to wake up the beautiful singing of the birds and watch the sun come up over the palm trees this is the place for you!

Room Tip: Our 2 bedroom was like a townhouse with the master bedroom on the second floor with a Lanai. Small b...

We weren't too sure what to expect as this was our first time to the Big Island. The resort is small and quiet with beautiful grounds. The "regulars" that stay there every year are very friendly and welcome you. Our first night we were invited to the "potluck" dinner by the pool and even though we weren't prepared for it and only had chips to offer, they invited us to partake. It is very remote from the larger cities but that's part of the charm. We explored the Black Sand beach, snorkeled with the turtles, climbed over the lava fields and walked across the crater. We can't wait to go back!

If your looking for a tranquil, relaxing & peaceful vacation, this is the perfect place. If you want tours, shopping & the hustle & bustle, look elsewhere. This is one of many trips to Hawaii & second time to the big island. This island was my favorite before & didn't disappoint this time! Great location to visit volcano & green sand beach. An hour drive to Hilo & 2 hours to Kona. Rooms are newly renovated, clean & spacious. We had a 2 bedroom unit. No air conditioning, but never felt too hot. The grounds are beautiful!! One of my favorite vacations ever.

This was our first time to the Big Island and had no idea exactly where this resort was. We quickly learned the best part of the location was also the worst part. Snuggled in at the Black Sands beach, it is well kept, quiet and nice accommodations but also quite a distance from the more populated areas and attractions of the island except for Volcanos National Park. We dove out of Kailua-Kona daily so the 1 hr 45 minute one way commute was not ideal but at the end of the day, this well kept secret was just the get-away we needed!

This is a wonderful place to stay. This was our first trip to the big island and at first we were worried that Sea Mountain would be too remote and we would be bored and fussy about having to drive every and anywhere. We were very happily incorrect. Yes you must have car, but the place is great. We spent the first day exploring/hiking in Volcano Park, which is about 30-60 minute drive, but a great day trip, bring food or go to Volcano Village for lunch like we did. We spent day 2 golfing at the Sea Mountain Golf Course. I can’t golf, my husband is decent. We rented one set of clubs from the course (seemed decent to us) for $25 and we started off before 9am and paid $22 each and that includes a cart, which is a must have; I love to walk but was happy to have the cart, it’s a huge course! $69 for 18 holes, for two people with some amazing views, it’s a good deal, rates change depending on weekday/weekend and if you start after 9am. And there was no one around so we were not rushed and just had lots of fun. The course isn’t in great condition, there are bald patches, the greens are green but the fairways are sometimes brown and I think one water trap was allowed to dry up. There are some great holes to drive and few short holes. Overall, it’s lots of fun and I would recommend it to anyone for at least a morning of fun. Just bring lots of balls b/c if one goes into the bush good luck finding it.
The condo itself was great – recently updated and lovely. There is no AC, but ceiling fans, and we were out all day so didn’t notice if it was hot or not. We kept the blinds closed, the ceiling fans on and the windows open and were comfortable. Wireless is available, but it’s at the office, so depending on how far away your unit is, you may/may not get a signal. We were in unit 28 and could just get a weak signal. If you really need wireless, go to the office. Better yet, turn off and enjoy the tranquility.
The Black Sand beach down the road is one of the best things about Sea Mountain. It’s not a busy beach most of the time. There’s an area of fairly calm water, which is a bit cool b/c of the fresh water pond feeding into the bay. There are tour buses that come to show people the sand…and… the main attraction – TURTULES! I love wildlife and I was over the moon to see so many. We saw some in tide pools, some on the rocks, some on the beach and a few eating while snorkeling. I recommend bringing snorkeling gear and water shoes as the bay’s bottom is all lava rock. There are also plenty of great fish to see too!

The only thing I would do different next time is to stock up on more food from Kona or Hilo. There are two large convenience stores in either direction, that’s it. I didn’t see any fruit stands in the area. There’s a full service grocery store in Ocean View – Ocean View Market between mile markers 77 and 76. We just found it on our last night, it’s open late too which is great.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the golf course

This is our second stay at Sea Mountain and we love it. Sea Mountain is 1 ½ hours south of Kona, which many people complain of, but it is much nearer to Hilo and the volcano for visits there, next to the Black Sand Beach and other walking opportunities along the shore and we cannot express enough about how peaceful it is. Couple that with a pool that is usually available, an oceanfront hot tub, and hearing the surf from our unit – we’re happy! We saw 19 turtles one day: we are only a 5 minute walk to the Black Sand Beach and the ocean environs there. For our first day’s walk, I didn’t even take my camera since we seldom saw any turtles there last year , except for seeing a head or two occasionally sticking up out of the waves. But this time, they were everywhere: in the water, out of the water, and particularly interesting, close to the rocky shore feeding, then we could see their brown backs …they look like rocks too up close! .. and then their heads came up every now and then. To see that many, we walked to several coves, it was very fun.
There are restaurants within 10 minutes, and shops as well to buy groceries, although we usually buy in Kona before we come, even loading up at Costco.
Sunrises are fabulous and even sunsets are pretty. VI units have been redone and they are very nice inside. The bedding is wonderful. We are planning to come next year, too.

We cannot begin to say enough about Sea Mountain, our room was beautiful, the view was gorgeous, the property was well taken care of, and the black sand beach was only a few minutes away. We will definitely be going back here...We wish we had left Waikiki sooner so that we had more time at the resort. We highly reccomend this resort. With the ocean breezes comming through the patio doors the tempreatures were perfect, there was no need for air conditioning. The washer and dryer in the room was a life saver as we were traveling for another week.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top (split level condos...top is three steps up) facing the ocean.....
