“Rejuvenate and renew: Kalani brings out the best in everyone”
Reviewed 25 January 2013

I have visited Kalani twice in the past 2 years, for a yoga retreat in January. For the nature-loving, low maintenance traveler who is ready to relax and renew in a soulful environment, this is a wonderful choice! As one staffer noted, Kalani is a retreat center, not a resort, so if you need something, they are happy to help, but you must ASK.

The food is excellent, with lots of fresh fruits & vegetable, and vegan, vegetarian and meat entrees available. Dining is cafeteria style on a lovely lanai.

The classes offered are eclectic and wonderful: hula, burlesque, Hawaiian healing, yoga, etc.

The pool area is clothing optional, but if you tend to be shy, suits are fine too. There is shade and moderate privacy around the pool and spa area. If you love to skinny dip but enjoy modesty, I would recommend an early morning dip when the area is completely deserted.

Definitely try out a massage from one of their excellent massage therapists. Several modalities offered mean that there is something for just about everyone: Deep Tissue, Lomi Lomi, Thai, Watsu ( a wonderfully gentle massage in the water where you truly are weightless and a lot of unwinding can happen), Hot Rocks, etc etc. Don't forget to tip!

The staff and volunteers are friendly, dedicated and hard working. Who wouldn't be in such a supportive atmosphere?

I am already scheming about how I can get back for another yoga retreat at Kalani in 2014!

Room Tip: I think they are all lovely. Tell the staff what you are looking for, and they will be sure to help...

I spent a week at this resort as part of a yoga retreat. The location, grounds, and staff were excellent. The food was plentiful and delicious with many cooking styles represented. I especially liked that the people who volunteer to work there are considered part of the community, sharing meals and facilities with paying guests. Also, people who live locally are welcomed to participate in most of the events.
Unlike other reviewers, I found the mix of people to be remarkably diverse, men and women, gay and straight, young and old. The clothing optional areas always felt natural, like not wearing clothes in a pool is normal.
My room in the Hale had no sound insulation, so you can be impacted by noisey neighbors. However, that was not a problem and I slept well there.

Room Tip: I think the individual cottages work best for people who would like more privacy and quiet.

Kalani, the largest retreat center in Hawaii, offers personal and group yoga retreats and a mix of performing arts, nature, adventure, and diverse programming. The location is ideal, close to lava fields, a black sand beach, tidal pools for snorkeling and jungle and cliff walks overlooking the Pacific. The staff is more than helpful, friendly and gracious, and the in-house cuisine is gourmet level and very healthy. The grounds include a large swimming pool, watsu pool, sauna, sweat lodge, and massage rooms. Highly recommended for those seeking a relaxing and healthful vacation.

If you are looking for a place to get away this is it. Food is amazing- fresh and abundant. Rooms vary in building age. There aren't very amnesties but it gets you away from reality. The staff is so helpful and thoughtful in your stay. They do massages there and prices are good. So many things to to around the grounds including a nude beach, volcano, hiking, snorkeling, and partying at Uncle Awa's. This part of the big island is awesome in the rainforest and so far from tourists. If you are thinking about going you should just do it! I would think twice if you are bringing children unless you have a very hippy kind of family lifestyle :).

Wake to ocean breezes then take a short stroll to the dining lanai where you enjoy a fresh, lovingly prepared breakfast. Head over to the pool for a quick dip before your amazing yoga or dance class. Each day is yours. You can explore this lush, inviting Hamlet, or plop down in a hammock and let the beauty sink in. All the while you are embraced by the 100 or so volunteers who welcome you to the Kalani Ohana (family). Three beautiful meals a day, simple yet comfy accommodations, classes to uplift the body and soul, and warm, openhearted people all make me look forward to my next visits to Kalani.

Room Tip: Rooms with an ocean view mean a short walk to the dining lanai and pool but are worth it. Quiet hou...

The food was healthy and lots of it. The grounds were beautiful. If you like a secluded place to vacation this is a great spot. Attended some great yoga classes and a few cooking classes. I was there during the Puna Culinary Festival. I was disappointed that there weren't more cooking classes. That is one of the main reasons I went.

I love Kalani and the people volunteering and visiting there, are such amazing people. I enjoyed all of the positive energy I felt from everyone there. The cooking was such a great experience for me! I cook dinner every night for my family at home, and it was nice to have a home cooked meal that I didn't have to cook. They also had great vegan, and vegitarian choices which I also enjoyed very much.
I will say this, Kalani isn't for everyone, BUT if you are looking for a place to just be yourself, and disconnect from the exhausting 9-5 of the mainland, than this is the place! Also I would recommend leaving your blow dryer at home : )
I will never forget my experience at Kalani, and cherish all the connections I made with such wonderful people!
