“Fantastic place to stay”
Reviewed 6 June 2011

I was here for work rather than play but what a wonderful place. The hosts are so accommodating and kind, I can't imagine ever staying in a hotel in the area again. It's a beautiful location, peaceful, clean, and comfortable with every amenity you could ever need. Get there during the day so you can find it, it's nestled in the woods.

Extremely nice and helpful hosts and the location in the south east of the island made the Ohia House an excellent base for all volcano park related stuff and the whole east side of the island. The nice room with a deck and the awesome breakfasts made our stay very pleasant. Thanks a lot! We hope to come back someday.

We feel lucky having this lovely place to stay for our vaccation. It is in a tropical forest and great location approching to the beach. The most beautiful thing is the frogs sing like soft music during the evening. Highly recommand this B&B for your stay!

We stayed at the Ohia House for 5 nights in late January and we loved every minute of it. The one B&B room is separate from the house and private. One of the very wonderful aspects of the room is that it has a large semi-private, covered and screened deck area that is perfect for dining, reading or snoozing. We spent many pleasurable hours out on the deck in the mornings, evenings and even late at night. The rainforest around the Ohia House is alive with wildlife and we enjoyed hearing the bird calls during the day and the frogs and insects at night.

The grounds are very nicely landscaped and the yard is private (no next door neighbors). The parking place is about 15 feet from the porch and is very convenient. There are about 6 steps up to the deck and then everything flat on one level.

BREAKFAST here is to die for. Every morning we had a new surprise entree, always accompanied by fresh local fruit, juice and great coffee.

The hosts, Cindy and Rick, are very friendly and helpful. They can tell you where to go to see the sights and they know the good restaurants in town. Eating dinner in Pahoa was a very pleasant surprise; there are actually some very good restaurants in this small and somewhat remote town.

I'm sure we'll go back to visit Cindy and Rick again sometime in the future.

The separate room and porch were spotless. The breakfast was equal to any top hotel restaurant. The hosts were very helpful and at the same time respectful of privacy. All in all it was a total surprise to find such a first-class bed and breakfast in such a relatively isolated area as Pahoa. We highly recommend it as a base from which to visit the south of the Big Island.

And for da mainlan haoles, lanai means porch (i.e., a Hawaiian house with an open-sided lanai to catch the tropical breezes). This is a nice clean comfy room that is separated from the main part of the home by a hallway, so you have plenty of privacy.

The food was great and the folks friendly. And now we are back in a cold, snowy, grey mountain valley of Utah.....

Cindy and Rick go all out to make your stay perfect, offering you a beautiful space with your own huge screened lanai and open porch, use of beach mats, umbrellas (handy for passing showers) and ponchos (perfect for hiking in Volcano NP!), masks and snorkels (reef and turtle viewing musts), and the most gorgeous and delicious breakfasts you can (or can't!) imagine, featuring lots of (mostly organic) tropical fruits and other gourmet dishes.
With only one guest unit, Ohia House gives you the idyllic "Private villa in the Hawai'ian jungle" experience, with night serenades of frogs, insects, birds and rain-showers, tree-filtered sunrise light and much more. And their travel/tour advice is well researched and spot on.
NOTE: If you want to experience lava flow up close, this is the perfect base for doing a walking tour from End of the Road; our November 2010 experience was that of a lifetime!
