We'd been hearing about the Tin Shack from local friends and tried it last week. Huge, funky but clean former auto shop turned bakery staffed by the friendliest happiest folks around. The clientele is pure Pahoa; retirees, travelers, hippies, locals, you name it.
The sourdough rye is straight out of my childhood New York bakery (an amazing find!), the cinnamon buns are huge and not too gooey, just delish, the flourless chocolate cake is like a soft luscious candy bar.
We hope to get back soon to sample the breakfast sandwiches, soups and other savory items.
Free wifi and happy staff make this place a must try.

We stumbled on this place. Driving through a town that looks like it was built a hundred years ago. A sign pointing to bakery. We get to this old tin building. Looks like a hippie place out of the sixties. Lots of long hair guys. Food was awesome and reasonable. There was an open mike with folk song singers that were really good. What an amazing afternoon.

Eclectic funky Cafe/bakery in an old tin car/body shop.
Great coffee and awesome food and baked goods ....local grown ingredients when possible, organic, free ranging....gluten free items as they are very health conscious and open for suggestions for more goodies. Live music, internet stations, super friendly help and fantastic owners.
You will find all walks of people hanging out here....super fun to just hang, sip tea or coffee, people watch, listen to music and talk story.
Thank you Matt and Noel for opening this wonderful place!
Oh and I forgot....GREAT PRICES ;)

The Tin Shack Bakery not only has some of the best food in town, it also has great local artwork displayed on the walls, great live music and the best Puna atmosphere you can absorb all in one sitting! The sourdough rye is fantastic, though ALL their fresh baked breads have devoted followers. The "pastry case" had all kinds of goodies..the infamous date bars, "onolicious bars" (all I heard was chocolate ganache and I was done in!) a raw carrot treat...gluten free specialties...a flourless chocolate cake...a beautiful chocolate cake..more I can't remember...and my husband chose the zucchini chocolate chip bread. This was not overly sweet...it was dense and tasted fresh with zucchini...the chocolate..real, creamy...not the waxy overly sweet chips. The staff was super helpful and friendly...people seemed very comfortable...there's wi-fi...oh, and the music was AWESOME... a young woman on an uke accompanied by another gal on a violin...the vocalist was as good if not better than Norah Jones....I wish we could have stayed, but we were on a road trip and had to leave. We'll definitely make it back. I hope we'll be regulars. Neighbors say the eggs benedict are incredible and the coffee is really good. Once my husband heard the milkshakes are made with real ice cream and milk, he's found a piece of heaven right here in Pahoa town. Great place to spend some time "in the neighborhood" with locals and visitors alike. Feels welcoming and laid back.

There are done items you can count on to be ready at the counter to eat but never make your mind up until you get there. All baked goods are excellent. There doesn't seem to be a menu but you can always point and say "I 'll have what he has "
The only challenge is Parking. There's plenty but lots of customers too.
