“Wonderful rainforest hideaway”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

We stayed here for two nights so that we could experience the "other side" of the Big Island. I couldn't be happier that we did. Petra and John (and their very articulate son) were absolutely wonderful. Petra was a great resource for information about what to do and see in the Puna region.

The suite we stayed in was great and exceeded our needs for a getaway. The grounds (2 acres) that the house is on definitely makes the stay worth while. It's in the middle of the rainforest and couldn't be more beautiful. There are pineapples and all kinds of fruit growing in the "parking lot".

The breakfast was great, and included the fruit they grow there on the property.

We would definitely tell our friends and family to stay here and will hopefully get to return ourselves.

Petra and John's B&B was a oasis of green, cleanness and friendliness. We stayed there two nights only on our trip around the coast (May 18-20, 2012) but we immediately felt the charm of this lovely spot. Our apartment was a 2-bedroom upstairs. The rooms were spacious, bright, with large windows facing the wonderfully green large garden, comfortable beds, great bathroom and kitchen that had everything we needed. The owners welcomed us like friends or family and sat down with us and shared some of their life stories and tips on what it's nice to see around that area. The breakfast was cooked fresh each morning, one morning we had some wonderful apple pancakes, made the German way. Thanks Petra and John!

We booked this from Germany via Internet and found this place very friendly, clean and comfortable. Petra, the German host, was always willing to help and very knowledgable with tips and advice. Breakfast was simple but tasty and fully sufficient for our needs. The suite upstairs was a bit tight for a family of 5, but we arranged ourselves quite well for the few days we were staying there. The setting is a quiet (ignoring the coqui-frogs at night, which can be really noisy, but you get over it quite soon) and lush jungle dominated neighborhood, which provides an excellent impression of what the climate is like on the south-east side of the island. the garden is just fantastic, but you may need some bug-repellent to stay outside longer. Overall we liked this place very much and would come again.

When we arrived, we were greeted by our host Petra and her son Christopher. Both were friendly and welcoming with lots of local knowledge and information to share. The place itself is lovely, with beautiful grounds boasting pineapple and papaya trees as well as orchids and other flowers. We were free to wander through, explore, and take lots of pictures. We stayed in the studio room which was immaculately clean. really liked the separate entrance and the private bath. It created the perfect blend of privacy and social time. The breakfast was also wonderful, with delicious fruit artfully displayed, hearty scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, cereal, and really tasty sweet bread. We enjoyed it so much, we wanted to stay another night. I wholeheartedly recommend this B&B to anyone who is looking for a friendly, clean, comfortable place to stay.

We had two wonderful relaxing nights at this B & B. Close to all the volcano activities it was a great location set in beautiful gardens. Staying here was much better than basing ourselves at Volcano village or Hilo. Petra was a wonderful host and spent time with us to point out the best things to do with our limited time in the area. Very spacious facilities, comfortable bed and such a lovely setting. Highly recommend a stay here! Greg & Suzanne - Australia

Very friendly family, grounds are beautiful, breakfasts were great. Overall, a fantastic B&B conveniently located for Volcano NP and close to Lava Tree SP and tidal pools, lava flows, hot spring etc. This was the culmination point for our trip to Hawaii and was a great relaxing setting to wind down. Petra recommended restaurants in nearby Pahoa which were great as well, superb Italian food at Paolo's, good Thai at Ning's and the best steak in HI at Kaleo's. She took the time to explain the nearby attractions and lent us a map book, overall, if you're going to the Big Island, we highly recommend staying at Hale Makamae B&B.

Room Tip: Lanai suite is suitable for a Family of 4.

We have been fortunate to have travelled to so many wonderful destinations during the last two decades, and have mainly had good to great experiences with our accomodations. With our busy schedules it is not often that we are able to take the time to write a review.

Our most recent stay at Hale Makamae B & B, however, was one of those rare, outstanding experiences which we feel we really need to share with our fellow travellers. Tucked away in a lush, subtropical corner of paradise, surrounded by gardens lovingly planted and tended by Petra and John, our hosts, the beauty and serenity of Hale Makamae can not adequately be described in our review, but rather needs to be experienced. The location is also ideal. It is a short ride from Hilo, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the lava flows, a natural hot pool, and great snorkelling and white and black sand beaches, as well as other interesting things to do and see. Upon our arrival we were greeted as if we were long time friends or family. They took the time to get to know what we wanted to do while staying there and point us in the right direction. They lent us maps with the routes highlighted and snorkelling equipment. They know the area very well and were an invaluable resource to us. They made our experience on Hawaii Island much richer. Petra prepared a fabulous breakfast with hot as well as cold foods each morning, including an assortment of fresh island grown fruits and hot Kona coffee. We only arrived home from our vacation last night and have already recommended Hale Makamae to several friends. We will definitely stay here the next time we visit Hawaii.
