The best and only place to stay on the big island. Our host petra greeted us with a warm welcome . It was like staying with friends and not at a bed & breakfast. Close to everything and petra is very helpful with suggestions of what to do and where to go to see everything and the breakfast as good if not better than eating at home. Thank you to petra for opening your place to us

Great B&B! Petra is very welcoming. She gave us good tips about the area (+ maps, snorkeling gear, flashlights...) and we enjoyed her breakfast. Our room (the studio) was very comfortable and clean (I love the big bottles of shampoo and conditioner in the shower! Way better/greener than using small hotel-style bottles). Listening to the sound of nature at night was fantastic! If we come back to the Big Island one day, we'll definitely stay with Petra again!

This was a great little find in a quiet, secluded area. The grounds were amazingly immaculate. This was a great place as we saw many of the sites on the East, South and even the West side of the Big Island. Petra was an unbelievablely gracious host and was very helpful. She provided us with a lot of local knowledge and extremely helpful guide/map books. Petra made a very delicious breakfast every day, which we really looked forward to each time. We would absolutely recommend this place to anyone and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Petra you are amazing!!! Petra, du bist unglaublich. Vielen Dank für alles. Петра, вы удивительны. Большое спасибо за все.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor in the Lanai suite. This was a beautiful room and very spacious. We...

We recently stayed two nights with Petra. We stayed in the Makame room which we found somewhat small. It was however, equipped with all the necessities. Petra was very friendly and helpful with information about the general area. The breakfast was yummy...one day banana fritters, the other vegetable omlet. She prepared these herself. One thing.....as a suggestion would be to have a toaster available. The grounds were beautiful and many flowering orchids were blooming during our stay. In the room there was instant coffee which we did not use and the creamer contained corn syrup . Maybe using half and half and real coffee could be considered? Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definately return as the deficiencies were minor in the overall scheme of things. She does a great job with her guests.Great location for the area.

1. Host really helpful, speak English and German. Always ready for good tips in the area, good suggestions
2. Good location for a lot of activities in this part of island ( beach, volcano...), nice beaches, really interesting lava trek
3. The BB is nice, really functional: large area, nice kitchen (our suite)
4. Large garden and really floral
5. Large parking
Certainly a good option in this area

The top reason to stay here is the location. You are within easy reach (less than 20 min) of some really unique snorkeling and beach spots, like the Kapoho Tide Pools, and the geothermal ocean pool at Ahalanui Park. You are also 5 min from Lava Tree State Park, and within easy reach of Hilo and some of the great places nearby (like Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens - a must!). We actually drove over to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to get an evening view of the Kilauea lava vent, which was about an hour each way, but doable (and really, it is good to be far enough away from the actual park to avoid any chance of problems with vog). Everything was spotlessly clean and the property was very nice, with a separate parking area and approach for guests, which is nice. Breakfast was also very good, and Petra was incredibly well-informed and willing to spend considerable time in the morning helping you settle on your plans. I don't give five stars lightly, so the reasons that this place gets four are: the accommodations themselves are middle of the road in quality, with lower-end furniture and the overall aesthetics of a good hotel room. Which is only to say that the decorations appeared to have been chosen more because they were convenient, inexpensive, and inoffensive, rather than because the decorator had put a lot of thought into it. Also, the timing of things like check-in and breakfast is a bit inflexible: a 5-star in this category offers breakfast at a range of times so that you can be an early or late riser if you want (breakfast is at 8:30 here), and you can arrive at any reasonable time and still be greeted/welcomed on arrival, rather than encountering problems if you arrive earlier/later than you'd originally indicated. And yes, the frogs are noisy, but that is hardly Petra's fault, and is also common of all of the wetter areas on the island. It is just something to think about. I slept well without the need of earplugs.

Aloha to Future Visitors and the friends of Hale Moana Bed & Breakfast,

I would like to thank Lauren and Kevin for their review, but also wanted to take the opportunity to respond to the portion where they are request/suggesting more flexibility with check-in and breakfast times.

The satisfaction of my customers has a top priority for me. However, I am asking for your understanding, that Hale Moana Bed & Breakfast is not a hotel operation with a 24-hour check-in desk and a staff present at the location at all times. I am a one-woman show, single mom with two kids, juggling a few balls at the same time. All I am asking for is planability. I am very good at accommodating individualized requests as long as I know about them and can make provisions for them: If you would like to check in outside our regular check-in times, it is usually no problem. Even if I am not here, I can always make arrangements. Arrangements were also made for Lauren and Kevin, who wanted to check in at 9pm on the evening of their arrival.

Breakfast at 8:30 suits most everybody. Again, accommodations can be made to special needs.

Communication is key in all of our relationships and this is what I am valuing most of all in all the years of having the bed & breakfast: nurturing relationships with my customers and helping you to have a wonderful time here in this beautiful place.

Much Aloha,

Petra Wiesenbauer
Owner

It's a paradise in Hawaii. I had the chance to stay a 2nd time here for 10 nights and loved it again. Petra is looking after each guest to make sure that no wishes remain open. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. It's an easy going / relaxed atmosphere. The house is close to the Volcano Nationalpark and my favorite the "hot ponds" where you can relax and watch the ocean. I stayed in the Garden Suite - maybe a bit large for 1 person - but the perfect size for me to relax. If you don't want to travel around you can relax on the patio reading or checking your laptop etc. WiFi is available. The breakfast is terrific and changes from day to day except the fresh fruits :-). Aloah

Room Tip: the rooms with a kitchenette is always helpful. You don't need anything for breakfast because Pe...
