Everything about this B&B is perfect: the house, the rooms (even our tiny room made us feel at home immediately - the other rooms are way bigger), the gardens, the cats ;), the breakfast and not to forget - Petra, the host. The location is absolutely ideal to explore the east of Big Island with its volcano, lava and beautiful coast line. From the moment we entered our room we were able to relax from our very long journey to this place in the remoter part of Big Island - especially the sounds of the frogs made us feel like being in the middle of a jungle. Just see for yourself!

As a family of 4, we stayed at the Hale Moana for 4 nights, in the family suite (comfortable beds, and plenty of space with the exception of a single too-small-for-4 bathroom). The filling and delicious breakfasts were a great foundation for each day, and we really appreciated Petra taking the time each morning to go over maps and options for the day. The exquisitely lush garden, and its night-time sounds, was a bonus. Overall, a very satisfying B&B experience.

Very nice Bed&Breakfast conveniently located about 30 minutes from Hilo Airport and 30 minutes from Volcano National Park. The host, Petra, is very friendly and had lots of helpful information on about the locations that we could see in the region and good restaurant recommendations in the village. And the breakfast in the morning was just perfect!

We stayed in Hale Moana B&B for 5 nights and it was the best accommodation we had on Big Island. Due to peak season and our late booking, we had to move rooms 3 times but all without any troubles. Prior to our arrival, Petra was extremely helpful and went out of her way to check information for us and answered every single question we had. We stayed in the Garden Suite, Studio and Palani Suite and all three are clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. It was like home away from home. The breakfast was fantastic, plenty of food to eat and always a variety to choose from. On two occasions we needed to have an early start at 5.45am and we requested for some simple jam sandwiches to take with us for a long day trip and our requests were met without fuss. We really appreciate Petra and Shawna for makjng our stay so welcome and comfortable and giving us all the tips about things to do. The gardens are amazingly beautiful and the frogs chorus at night was unforgetable. Go around and smell the different orchids and enjoy the Aloha hospitality of Hale Moana B&B. We highly recommend this accommodation and will return to stay there. Mahalo Petra and Shawna.

It took us between 45min and 1h to reach the place from Hilo airport. We had the garden suite and it was perfect for a family with 2 younger kids. The garden is huge and there're plenty of exotic fruits which invite kids for some harvesting activities :-) For breakfast there're always a lot of fruits and loads of american stuff.
Petra has equipment for snorkling and boogie boards for fun surfing which we could borrow for free. The black sand beaches and parks on the east side of the island are a bit tough for youngsters but the white sand beaches on the west side (2.5h drive) are great for families.
Tips for tours as well as a map with handwritten hints for beaches, sights and restaurants are provided by Petra and are a great help ;-)
Pictures from the glow of the volcano (30min drive) can be taken "cheap" from the bar of the volcano house or "expensive" from the restaurant of the volcano house.

Room Tip: The garden suite has a full kitchen which is together with the living room one big space.

My wife and I stayed at the end of June 2014 - we are just finishing our tour of Hawaii (second time in two years) and the Hale Moana Hawaii B&B has been the best. From now on won't bother with hotels. Staying here was a great experience.

Very clean accommodation quarters, gluten-free friendly (finally somewhere), spacious car-parking, FREE wireless fast internet, beautiful residence and grounds and excellent breakfasts!! Petra the owner is very knowledgeable about the attractions of the Big Island and anything Big Island-related. Petra was very helpful throughout our entire stay. This assistance was invaluable to us - thank you.

We can highly recommend this place to anyone doing their research on where to stay on the Big Island. 5/5, 10/10, A++.

Room Tip: Pualani Suite is what we stayed in - basically a very new self-contained spacious unit. Excellent!

If you are looking for a place to stay on the east side of the island, you should consider this place as an option. My family stayed here for a couple of nights and it worked out great. It's a little bit over 30min drive to Hilo and Volcano but it's worth the drive. From the gracious host - Petra, to the attractions nearby (tide pools, lava tree park, hot pool, scenic drive on 137, etc.), to the trampoline that my kids enjoyed quite a bit, to the yummy breakfasts, and just simply the gorgeous surroundings. I also had booked a hotel in Hilo but I'm glad I cancelled that one and stayed at Hale Moana. It was perfect for my family and might work out for you as well.

Room Tip: the Garden room with the convertible sofa was perfect for a family of 4
