“Pleasant for a short visit if you are in the vicinity”

Lava Tree State Park
Ranked #9 of 26 things to do in Pahoa
Attraction details
Reviewed 24 October 2013

The State Park is very small, with about .7m of trails through lush, tropical plants and "Lava trees". It is nicely maintained with a gazebo and restrooms.
We drove quite a long distance to see this and, whilst it was interesting, I would only go back if I happened to be in the vicinity.
It is not the sort of place where you can while away the hours. We slowly walked around the trail and took some photos but once you have seen all the lava trees, there is nothing much else to do.
Tip: There are no shops nearby, so if you are thinking of buying food for a picnic, stop at one of the shopping malls on the 11 or 130.

My husband and I enjoyed taking a nice stroll around the park. It's easy walking and a good spot for taking pictures.

We went on a slow day and were pleased that the walk was uncrowded. We had to use a wheelchair for my wife but the walkways were very well maintained.
The bathrooms were ok. There was plenty of parking (for a slow day).

Very nice, especially early in the morning, when you are alone in the dense green and lush forest park. Very quiet and relaxing. Atmosphere is just amazing there.
Walk takes maximum 15 minutes, there are benches to sit and even some protection from rain over them.

Not sure if it is worth a visit from long away due to other nice things on Big island, but we stayed next to the park, so it was a must see. Went there three times at 7 a.m. before breakfast. Admission free, there is a big parking lot next to it with restrooms.

Rains there very often, so get a rain coat or umbrella, if rain sensitive.

A pleasant walk in a garden like setting will reveal Hawai'i's violent geological past. The trail is well maintained and not strenuous. Information placards reveal the history of this area.
