The pictures don't do this place justice, beautiful as they are. It's so much more than the pictures can show - the peace, serenity, the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below, the utter beauty and privacy - it's truly paradise.
The house itself is perfectly appointed with modern appliances and pretty much everything one could hope to find in a rental home. The bed is very comfortable, everything is beautifully decorated, and the hot tub is glorious. You can't really tell from the photos, but the deck is ENORMOUS, big enough to live on - and we pretty much did.
We saw so much, just from our deck! Humpbacks nearly every day, spinner dolphins chasing fish, Hawaiian hawks (three of them at once one day!), akepa birds, mongoose, my beloved little house geckos, tiny little bats eating mosquitoes, coqui frogs, flocks of cattle egrets every morning...the nature show was ever-changing and unfailingly absorbing.
Within a short drive is everything that Hilo offers - the farmer's market, with its unbelievably wonderful produce, great snorkeling right in town (Richardson Ocean Center), museums, great local restaurants, shopping. A little further, and you're in Volcanoes National Park, or you can head south to Puna and the glorious Kapoho Tidepools (the snorkeling is out of this world). There are incredible waterfalls and a world-class botanical garden within a few minutes' drive (in fact, the best botanical garden of all is literally on the cliff below the property).
We ended up spending the entire week on the Hilo side, and still didn't get to everything we wanted to see. I am so glad we opted to rent the cottage for a week: I think we would have cried if we'd had to leave it after only a day or two. We will definitely be back as soon as we can manage it.
