“The Epitome of Lush Tropical Hawaii - Not to be missed!”

On our drive from Hilo back to Waikoloa on the northern route, we stopped at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens not knowing what to expect, and spent an incredible 2+ hours walking from beautiful flower to exquisite plant to the waterfalls and then the ocean and back. We loved that most every plant was labeled so you could tell what you were seeing and where it was native - not many were found native to Hawaii. It was such a contrast to the Kona side - a perfect excursion to take if you are staying on that side as we were.

“Stunning!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2013

These gardens are off of the 4-mile scenic route which in and of itself is a worthwhile and beautiful drive. The paved 1.25 mile garden trail offers constant delights from orchids to waterfalls to the ocean and much more. If you are the type who refuses to go to an Italian restaurant unless the staff are all from Italy and the food is imported from Florence, then you may not be interested in this garden. Most of the plant life is not native. However, it is beautiful nonetheless and offers a 1 1/2 to 2 hour stroll along a paved walkway to view the exotic plants. One word of caution - to get to the valley where much of the garden is - you need to walk down a steep decline. Not too bad if you are careful - but to exit you must walk back up what is now a steep incline. If you are in fairly good shape it should not be a problem. They do offer golf cart assistance for those in need. Assess the ability of those in your party. Also, there are little benches along the decline/incline to rest, if needed.

“Beautiful, surprise excursion!”

My husband and I decided to drive to this side of the Island to see Akaka Falls. When we finished there, we decided to stop at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. It is beautiful, and you really don't have to be a gardener to enjoy this spot. It was a wonderful, relaxing walk through an extensive collection of exotic plants. I am a beginner (very beginner) photographer, and I loved the opportunity to play around with my camera to capture the beautiful flowers and plants throughout the grounds. Much of the time it felt like we were the only two people there, and before we knew it, 3 hours had passed. It was one of the most unexpected and enjoyable experiences of our entire vacation. I would highly recommend it. Be prepared to walk a lot and make sure you can handle walking up stairs and steep inclines. While most of this is paved, easy terrain, there are areas with extensive steps. The final walk out requires you to go up a fairly steep incline, but it should not be a problem unless you have prior mobility issues. For most of the grounds, it is a lovely, relaxing stroll.

“Gardeners Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2012

A must visit for any gardener visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. 37 beautiful acres on Onomea Bay, a short drive from Hilo. A vast collection of orchids, rare palms, massive Monkeypod & Banyan trees with breath taking canopies and waterfalls all on well maintained trails and boardwalks. Trails lead down to the ocean with wonderful views of beach and waves. Try and visit before 3pm for best camera light, some shade in the afternoon, but still so beautiful. Well worth the $15 admission which goes towards maintaining the gardens.
