“Quiet and peaceful”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

We stayed 3 nights in the Sanctuary. It is not a large space, but there is ample room to get around (although the bathroom is narrow!). You definitely feel like you're in a rainforest, and despite the large windows you don't feel like anyone else is around. The breakfasts were just wonderful and were our 2nd favourite feature. The best part for us was the outdoor shower and soaking tub. They really rejuvenated us after a long day driving around the park.

The room was clean and taken care of, the manager explained everything to us and gave us tips on the park. The only thing not ideal was the parking; it was okay, but it did take some maneuvering to get our car lined up.

On the plus side, there were many small extras that we appreciated: housecoats, indoor and outdoor slippers, umbrellas and flashlights. Would certainly recommend it!

Aloha Laura and Steve,

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us and that the outdoor shower and soaking tub were a special delight! The Sanctuary was designed with the intent of experiencing the natural beauty of the rainforest in the most intimate way, in full sunshine, fog, mist or rain!

We value your note about the parking. All of our cottages at Volcano Rainforest Retreat were built with the intent to preserve as much as the native Hawaiian forest as possible, including the shared carport. Most of our trees are between five and six hundred years old! We have made special note of your comments and are exploring possible improvements that would still protect the old growth forest. We so appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. It is extremely helpful in preparing our guests for their experience here in this unique space in a native rainforest.

Mahalo nui,

Kathleen and Peter Golden

We stayed one night in the Volcano Rainforest Retreat. We had spent our first three nights in Waikoloa, but it wasn't until we checked in here that we felt like we were on vacation. The grounds are beautiful and lush and each room is unique. The staff was so friendly and helpful, we felt very comfortable and relaxed right away. We also had an amazing nights sleep. The bed was comfy and it was so serene to fall asleep to the sound of rain and wake up to the birds chirping. It is very close to the national park, so we were able to view the volcano at night and also get to the park early before the crowds. We stayed in the Forest room and it was very nice. The only considerations were that the bathroom was very small and we could not figure out how to get the overhead shower vs. tub to turn on which made showering a bit of a challenge and there was no sink in the bathroom. We will definitely come back and next time we will stay longer.

Aloha IAS-KC,

We greatly appreciate the time and effort taken to provide us with valuable feedback! Our cottages are designed to occupy as little a footprint as possible in the native Hawaiian old growth rainforest. As a result, our cottages are equipped with unique and eco-friendly and water conscious amenities.

We deeply regret any inconvenience you experienced. We have since provided a note in the shower with instructions for our guests advising them of the unique shower feature. Thank you for advising us of this special consideration. It is very important to us to provide our guests with the best experience possible and we always enjoy looking for ways to improve.

Thank you choosing our retreat and we look forward to hosting you again in the near future!

We spent two nights in the Forest House and will never forget the place or the hosts, Peter and Kathleen, a warm and welcoming couple who have created an amazing piece of paradise. The craftsmanship of the cottage, the attention to detail in every aspect and their impeccable good taste make this one of the most unique and enjoyable places we have ever stayed. The privacy, the breakfasts and the soaking tub (great after a day of hiking!) added to the our experience. We will definitely go back!

We drove up the private driveway to our little cottage and checked out of the world! We loved it for all of the reasons reviewers have already explained here, complete privacy, comfy bed, fireplace, windows out-looking gorgeous rainforest foliage, wonderful local food and a great drivable location for the Volcano, Hilo, and the Volcano Village. There are so many little touches inside the cottage, from the soaps, the candles, teas and 100% Kona Coffee and the organic snacks that make it just so lovely. We went Ziplining at Umauma falls the next day and were still back in Kona by 6PM. It was a wonderful weekend. We came home renewed, refreshed, and planning our next trip back.

This was our second trip to VRR—and certainly not our last! This place is truly special. Don’t think of this as a bed and breakfast with common areas where you meet other travelers or gorge on giant hot breakfasts (not that those are bad things!). This is a quiet, peaceful retreat where I can feel the tension in my shoulders drip away. Each cottage has a completely private setting with access to outdoor o’furo tubs or a hot tub. This trip we stayed the in the Bamboo House, the newest cottage on the property. It was totally worth the extra money. We were so comfortable there, we could hardly talk ourselves into leaving for the day! We highly recommend VRR.

My husband and I spent two nights in the Bamboo Guest Cottage and had a lovely stay. The cottage itself is quiet and beautiful, and we loved the skylights, the music and dvds available (no tv or cable), and the Japanese o'furu in the back garden. It worked well for us having a full kitchen, as we are vegan and often have difficulty finding many options for restaurants that meet our needs. (Anne and Nancy made sure we had non-dairy milk and plenty of fruit for our breakfast, as well as a delicious local granola. The baked goods looked amazing, though!) VRR is only 2 miles from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park, and most amenities of "civilization" (aka the shops and resources in Hilo) are at least 20 minutes away. We spent most of our time in the park, but we did drive to South Point and also to Mauna Kea for star gazing; both are about 60-90 minutes away (one way), so just plan accordingly. We would recommend this inn for those who are truly looking for a peaceful retreat, rather than meeting lots of new friends or a place where you feel like you're a guest at someone's house -- this is not the type of B&B where people congregate for breakfast or afternoon drinks. But this was exactly what we were looking for in our short trip to the Big Island, so we loved it!

Room Tip: The Bamboo Guest Cottage is ideal for couples looking for a cozy romantic escape, but it could also...

We spent 2 nights in the Sanctuary and loved every aspect of it. Minute details, including slippers in the room and for the outdoor shower, robes etc are thought of and the quality of the breakfast items is excellent. Although the sanctuary is really small, especially when you're eating breakfast, we didnt mind and loved being in the middle of the rainforest in very modern and comfortable accommodation. The private hot tub is of course a bonus. The toilet is attached to the room, and the shower is outdoors. They have some movies and a lovely fireplace as well as romantic lighting- we loved it, thank you for a great time!
