The villa we stayed in was a work of art down to the small details. Simply but exquisitely decorated. Private. Quiet. Peaceful. The food was fresh and very good. She did a great job in accommodating my vegan diet.

My husband and I stayed here a few weeks ago on the start of our honeymoon. The bamboo cottage was a great place to come to every night after our hiking and snorkeling adventures. Kathleen and Peter oriented us to the whole island after we had arrived and made sure we knew the best spots to see in the time that we had.

We loved the many choices for breakfast.

Volcano Rainforest Retreat was excellent. We stayed in the 'forest house' house adjacent to the main building - all you can see from the accommodation is rainforest, beautiful and serene! The provisions for breakfast are excellent and the muesli divine! The beds were comfortable and the spa poor clean and private. We could not fault our hosts, who were very attentive and eager to ensure that they did everything they could to make our stay peaceful and enjoyable. We only spent two nights here, but we wish we could have stayed much longer in this magical place.

Room Tip: Spend as much as you can afford on your room, brings some good foodie supplies from Hilo or kona for...

This was one of the most memorable stays of my life, anywhere. My wife and I stayed for two nights on our honeymoon at the Forest House. I'm not sure how to describe the experience of walking up to our little cottage other than "otherworldly." You go through a beautifully maintained rainforest path, and there it is - a lovely cottage with a sunroof & lots of windows - most of which don't have any real shades to speak of...because...you're in the middle of a rainforest so there is no one to invade your privacy.

There is also a fantastic outdoor hot tub. We were told we would be sharing it with guests from another cottage, but we never saw them, and we used it both nights of our stay. Outdoor hot tub in a Hawaiian rainforest with a bottle of wine on your honeymoon? I've had worse evenings! :)

We met the owners briefly one night on our way out the door to dinner and they were both very friendly and kind.

As for the location, it certainly feels remote, but is just a short drive from Volcano village. A friend who lives in Oahu told me there was nothing to do in Volcano, but I disagree - we had two great meals there and being able to easily hop back to the Volcano National Park in the evening to see the red glow of the active volcano? Just fantastic.

Finally, I know there are similar properties - some cheaper, some more expensive. I chose this one after perusing what felt like a million websites...and I couldn't be happier I did. If we ever make it back to the Big Island (and I hope we do), we will stay here again - without question!

Volcano Rainforest Retreat was awesome! I took my boyfriend there for a one night stay as an early birthday present.

They are really close to Volcanoes National Park, so we were able to visit there first and get in a nice hike before checking in. At check in, the manager was very friendly and gave us a nice overview of our cottage. Our little bungalow is name The Sanctuary, and that is exactly what it is! The room is small and cozy, with an adorable little gas fire place. It also features outdoor bathing facilities - a furo (Japanese soaking tub) and a shower. The other cottages were just far enough away to afford privacy. Overall a great stay for a great price -- highly recommend!!

Room Tip: The Sanctuary cottage is the only one with a furo!

We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. That Japanese Furo is great after a long day in the Park. We do have one in our Bamboo Guest House as well and the Guest Cottage and Forest House both share a hot tub.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Sanctuary and we loved it! Truly a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the lush rainforest. All the details were thought through in the decor and in the space set up. We loved the experience of showering outdoors and the hot tub soak after days of hiking. The breakfast was fine - not a highlight, but definitely substantial

Thanks for visiting us and enjoying our Sanctuary! We buy breakfast goodies from local chefs and source local fruit for our guests to fuel up before their morning hike in the park.

We stayed 3 nights in the Sanctuary. It is not a large space, but there is ample room to get around (although the bathroom is narrow!). You definitely feel like you're in a rainforest, and despite the large windows you don't feel like anyone else is around. The breakfasts were just wonderful and were our 2nd favourite feature. The best part for us was the outdoor shower and soaking tub. They really rejuvenated us after a long day driving around the park.

The room was clean and taken care of, the manager explained everything to us and gave us tips on the park. The only thing not ideal was the parking; it was okay, but it did take some maneuvering to get our car lined up.

On the plus side, there were many small extras that we appreciated: housecoats, indoor and outdoor slippers, umbrellas and flashlights. Would certainly recommend it!

Aloha Laura and Steve,

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us and that the outdoor shower and soaking tub were a special delight! The Sanctuary was designed with the intent of experiencing the natural beauty of the rainforest in the most intimate way, in full sunshine, fog, mist or rain!

We value your note about the parking. All of our cottages at Volcano Rainforest Retreat were built with the intent to preserve as much as the native Hawaiian forest as possible, including the shared carport. Most of our trees are between five and six hundred years old! We have made special note of your comments and are exploring possible improvements that would still protect the old growth forest. We so appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. It is extremely helpful in preparing our guests for their experience here in this unique space in a native rainforest.

Mahalo nui,

Kathleen and Peter Golden
