We loved our two nights at Crater Rim Cabin. This was our 3rd visit to Volcano National Park. Once we drove from Kohala (twice) -- way too tiring after a day full of hiking etc. The next time we stayed at Volcano House -- it was as modern and welcoming as Bates Motel. So, for this trip, we wanted someplace super-convenient and super-comfortable...and Crater Rim Cabin fit the bill perfectly!

From directions with images to supplement the maps to a pre-arrival call to offer last minute info, to a friendly, helpful and quick intro to the Cabin, Barry and Jim show that they really know how to run a B&B! Their "welcome amenity" was yummier than what St Regis Princeville gave us 2 days later...and logging in to their WiFi was quicker and easier than at Hyatt Kauai (and doesnt cost a penny!).

CRC is a must for our next trip to see Pele!

We had a wonderful 6 night stay at Crater Rim Cabin July 2011. The cabin was extraordinary cozy and very very clean. Berry, as the perfect host, made us feel welcome and “at home”.

I have to confess, we scheduled our two-night trip to Volcano around the available dates at Crater Rim Cabin, and I'm so glad we did. All of the reviews are right, the place is amazing. It's a beautiful cabin, just minutes from the park entrance. The grounds are beautiful and located on the rim of an old crater (there's a big cliff towards the back of the garden and a few large cracks in the ground as well). The kitchen was stocked with fruit juice, milk, half-and-half, butter, jam, fresh bread, freshly ground coffee, tea, fresh fruit, and a dozen eggs -- all the fixings for a great breakfast! (Plus pots, pans, coffee filters, seriously, these guys have thought of everything.) There's also a stack of maps, brochures, etc for the park and DVDs of the local birds and the latest eruption. The entire cabin is spotless--I have never seen windows that clean before. There's a cozy gas stove/heater in the living room and an electric blanket on the bed, perfect for warming up after standing outside in the cold admiring the volcano!

Barry is wonderful. We'd forgotten what time we said we'd arrive (7pm) and ending up arriving two hours early. Oops. The cabin wasn't quite ready (just had to make the bed) and Barry was extremely apologetic despite this being entirely our fault. We chatted with him while he finished up and learned all sorts of interesting things (like the cliff in the garden), where to eat (Kiawe Kitchen for amazing but expensive pizza or Thai Thai for amazing and very reasonably priced Thai, but get there early because they don't take reservations), and where to see the lava (drive into the park after dark and park at the Jaggar Muesum).

All in all a wonderful time in Volcano, the park, and at Crater Rim Cabin. We'll be back, next time for longer!

We booked CRC based on all the excellent reviews it had and they are all correct. Barry gave us a lovely welcome and was very helpful about things to see and do. The cottage is a delight and so much care and thought has been put into it. Photos don't do it justice. There is also a lovely garden to sit in. We had 3 nights at CRC and left feeling so relaxed

We stayed here during part of our tour of the Big Island. It was so much more than we imagined, even after reading such great reviews. Our welcome by Barry was wonderful and informative. The small touches were so special and made us feel at home. All of your needs are met, and then some. The cabin is so lovely and cozy and very clean. The grounds are beyond beautiful. Our only sadness was when we moved on to other parts of the island and found subsequent rentals woefully lacking compared to Crater Rim Cabin. We hope to be fortunate enough to visit the Island again and if so, we must stay here.

There isn't much that we can say that hasn't already been said, but we'll re-iterate. We traveled in May 2011 with our three boys, ages 7, 10, and 13. All of us LOVED it. Jim did such a great job with logistics, emailing us very detailed maps before our trip which made it very easy to find the cabin on our first night on the island, even in the dark. Barry had a warm sign greeting us as we pulled in the driveway, fresh flowers in the cabin, delicious breakfast foods, and just about every amenity you can possibly imagine for a cabin (lots of clean towels, a warm fire and blankets, a fan, a checker/chess board, and so much information for us to peruse! Both Barry and Jim were extraordinarily friendly and helpful, and they gave us great tips on how to get the most our of our two days in Volcano, including eating supper at Thai Thai (good call!), going to the Volcano Farmers' Market on Sunday morning (6-9am!), and checking out the park. The boys are still talking about "the cabin" - we would go back in a heartbeat. You will NOT be disappointed with a stay here. Thanks, Barry and Jim - mahalo! Sincerely, Leslie and John Potter and boys
