This is an amazing place. Jim and Barry are amazing hosts, they pay attention to all the small details. When we walked in Barry was still cleaning, so we took a tour of the national park . When we came back to the cabin, it was sparkling clean, so clean that we could eat off the floor :). The hosts loaded the fridge with milk, half and half and eggs. They also provided bread, coffee, cold and warm cereal .. I was speechless.
This cabin is a gem - made of California red wood, big beds with electric blankets. My only regret is that we didn't stay long enough. Get up in the morning and walk the beautiful property. You will most likely meet Jim who will give you a detailed tour of the property. The property is only 5 min from the park, and Barry, who is a geologist, will make some excellent hike recommendations.

There is plenty of good food nearby. This cabin is simply superb. Book early as it fills up quickly. It is a little hard to find. Make sure you follow the directions provided by the hosts !

Room Tip: Book early. There is only one cabin .

We stayed for couple of nights at the end of June. We checked in late but Barry was still cleaning the cabin; then we finished dinner and came back but he was still cleaning !! This clearly shows up in the way the cabin is maintained. Nice big bed with electric blankets. Like everywhere else, the sofa bed was not that great. The access to this is through a gravel road just before the volcano golf club. It is very convenient to visit the volcano in the night which is when you should visit to really see the beauty. The cabin is especially good if your goal is to spend some peaceful time in a natural setting surrounded by the garden. The kitchen is well stocked with the essentials needed for a healthy breakfast. There was plenty of information about the local restaurants, map, guide etc. There is no laundry, no cable tv but can watch DVDs.

Room Tip: there is just one cabin, nothing to choose.

We stayed 9-12 June (3 nights) and absolutely loved Crater Rim Cabin. You can tell the place is kept and managed with love, and every detail is thought through.

The location is excellent for Volcanoes National Park, and for the nearby Volcano Village, and the accommodation is amazing (you'll see from my other reviews that I don't use this word lightly). If I ever visit the area again, I can't think of ever staying anywhere else.

There's plenty of provisions for breakfast, but make sure you also stock up for other meals, as restaurants in the area are pretty expensive (though we quite liked the Thai place in Volcano Village).

Stayed for 3 nights. Beautiful, immaculate cabin, beautiful grounds, wonderful owners, everything we needed for a great visit. Mornings and nights are cool- we loved the gas fireplace and electric blanket! All breakfast basics were provided.
Bring warm jackets and raincoat and keep them with you as the weather changes quickly. Only a few choices of restaurants in Volcano Village, with limited hours. The Oasis cafe has good home made food- soups, chili and made to order sandwiches- good for you're volcano hikes.

The cabin is a prime location as its 10 minutes from Volcanoes National Park and less than 1/2 hr from Hilo. We stayed five nights and loved it! You have your own cabin with full kitchen and bath, king-size bed, and nice sitting area along with a beautiful garden. Jim and Barry fall over themselves to make you comfortable! The bathroom is stocked with soap, shampoo and conditioner and enough towels for a month. The bed even has an electric blanket (at 4000 ft, the nights are a little cool). The kitchen was stocked with coffee, dry cereal, oatmeal, bread, and eggs to start you out (there are two general stores in Volcano, ten minutes away). There is no TV but there are lots of audio CDs and a great video on some of the volcanic eruptions since the 1990s. Barry is full of information on the volcanos, he's a retired geochemist.

The garden is just beautiful and a great place to bird watch for some of the endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers such as apapane and amakihi. The nearby golf course is the feeding grounds for the endemic, endangered nene (Hawaiian goose).

In short, this is the BEST B&B we've ever stayed at!

Room Tip: You have the entire cabin to yourself!

My wife and I have travelled quite well and to different places over the years. We like staying in cabins and B&B's as well as small and big hotels... I judge the places we stay from mainly three angles; first, welcome (service), second, comfort (amenities/bedroom), third, setting(location, character). All these factors converge in one final assessment: value. Is it worth it?
Looking back at our April 2014 visit to Crater Rim Cabin in Volcano, Island of Hawaii, I can, without hesitation say: it's a 10,10,10, on all three counts. At arrival we felt warmly welcomed by Barry. We were given the tour of the cabin and the explanation of where everything was clearly.
We slept very comfortably and prepared breakfast all three mornings, and we had all that we needed and more. We took the helpful advice from Barry about hiking in Kilauea Iki, inside the National Park. We enjoyed it immensely. We drove back and forth at ease to Hilo all three days to attend the Merry Monarch Festival. And throughout, the hosts made us feel like we were in a peaceful world of our own.
This charming and peaceful place is a winner. And moreover, if you are interested in photography like I am, you may have a chance to talk to Jim who is a master photographer. You will see his prints inside the cabin.
Attached are some of the photos I took during our stay.
I will happily book this Cabin again and go back to visit our new friends, Barry and Jim.
