After a long hike on Volcanoes National Park, there's nothing like getting back to a nice place and get to enjoy your sleep with cricket sounds and pouring rain while you're warm and cousy, knowing that you have an excellent breakfast waiting for you tomorrow.
Lenny and Vicky are the best hosts, for they take care of everything and keep your room nice and clean. They make sure that you got good books, cereal, milk, coffee (Kona-coffee, that is!), the bedroom and bathroom are very big and clean...and they recycle too!
So skip the hotels and fancy lodges and stay here! For you won't regret it....they are just too nice!
(they only don't have internet, yet, but Lenny was getting one while I was there, so you might well ask.

We ended up here because we wanted to extend our stay in Volcano by a night and our previous accommodations were booked up. I went down the list of lodgings on TripAdvisor and this was the first that had a vacancy available. I was a little nervous when Leonard gave me directions (down an unpaved road)... shouldn't have been. The Volcano Suite is a little piece of paradise: quiet, spacious, comfortable, with all the amenities you could want. Beautiful grounds and garden. They have plenty of reading material, and provide water, binoculars, umbrella, etc., to borrow while exploring the area. Leonard couldn't be nicer and his mom, Vicky, is also very friendly and made us a yummy continental breakfast. Now that we know about it, we'd like to come back for a longer stay! At this stage there is only the one rental unit, but they hope to add another couple of rooms to the grounds in future.

After reading many reviews of the b&b's in Volcano, we chose to stay at the Forest Fern Retreat for 2 nights. We arrived direct from our long flight in the evening, and Leonard helpfully phoned us when we were a couple of miles away to direct us to the house. The accommodation was a great choice for us, the room is like a small apartment attached to the house. It is very quiet and private. The room is actually nicer than I thought it would be from the photos online; the entrance and kitchen and bathroom are separated from the bedroom with a wall with an archway, it is all very clean and the linens and towels were nice. There's plenty of room to sit on the couch and have a snack or watch tv. The tv could do with an update, shame it was rather old as there were loads of channels, but we weren't there to watch tv anyway. Breakfast was brought the night before, papaya and banana and banana bread (delicious). There were also cereals in the cupboard as well as plenty milk, juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and a microwave. This suited us well as with the jetlag we were up quite early and didn't have to wait to have breakfast or worry about making noise too early.
The provided binoculars, flashlights and macs were also really helpful.
The gardens were beautiful to walk around and the drive from the main road wasn't far at all. I had been undecided about where to stay in Volcano, but this location was just a few minutes drive to the national park and the town, and turned out to be fine, the roads are good and empty.
We were very happy with this accommodation and the friendly owners, and would stay here again.
Aside from the accommodation, we had a fantastic time exploring the Volcano National Park, the rangers are helpful at the visitor center about what to see in the time that you have. It was great to be staying in Volcano to get there in the morning before any bus trips. We drove down to where the lava was visible in the nighttime (for us it was quite far away, but changes daily) and then drove back up and into the national park to see the caldera in the dark, which was a great experience. I loved the rainforest. We ate at a pizza restaurant (takeaway thin crust pizza - good), got sandwiches from the general store (so so) and dinner at the thai restaurant (yes the hot red curry is hot!)
On our last morning here we drove away in the direction of Hilo, so drive round the island to Waikoloa to spend a week by the beach.

You won't be disappointed by the this little out of the way room. You have a private entrance and the room is like brand new. I was staying at Kona at the Hilton the day before and this room (although not nearly as spacious) is way "cleaner" feeling and much nicer. I would have stayed the whole time there if I would have had a choice. Thanx again. Mike

My partner and I spent two nights at the fern forest retreat in late November. We were enthusiastically greeted by Vicki who gave us the lowdown on the area and made sure we were comfortable and had everthing we needed. The room is nicely appointed, and Lenny and Vicki seem to have thought of everthing we might need... menus for local restaurants, flashlights, binoculars, and umbrellas.

The room is large, comfortable and roomy. Breakfast was delivered the night before ... fresh mango and homemade banana nut (or something like that) bread, plus the breakfast items in the small kitchenette. coffee, tea, juice, milk, cereal. There is no kitchenette sink, but the hosts do the dishes, so no problem there!

The retreat is nestled in the rainforest 10 or 15 minutes drive from the town of Volcano and the National Park. It is not walking distance to any shops or restaurants, but it is perfect for short walks... the grounds are beautiful.

On our last night Lenny brought us some of the delicous enchiladas that he had made for dinner for visiting family... a generous and much appreciated touch.

The fern forest retreat is perfect for a couple wanting a quiet base for exploring Volcanoes National Park and the surrounding area.

The bed and breakfast was wonderful. The room is more like a small studio and beautifully decorated. There was bottled water each day to take on any excursion. Breakfast was home made sweet bread, fruit plate, cereal, coffee and juice--plenty to start the day off right. Location is rather remote, but once you find it (directions are clearly given), the B & B is easy to get to . An added bonus to the remoteness is that it is very quiet at night. Also is an ideal location if you plan on spending time at the Volcano National Park. Lovely gardens.

My wife and I arrived well after dark, but Lenny was there to greet us and get us settled in. The B&B is beautiful in every sense of the word - location, comfort, breakfast, amenities, bed, bath, you name it. After a wonderful week in a Waikiki hotel, we felt this was a huge step up in living. We arrived late enough to be on the cusp of not finding a restaurant still open in which to eat, but Lenny was kind enough to call ahead to the local Thai restaurant and get them to agree not to close before we arrived (my restaurant reviews are on Yelp). After dinner we went on into Volcano National Park and were impressed with the sight of the far away glowing caldera. As cool as that was, it did not compare to looking straight up at the most incredible sky of stars we've ever seen anywhere! Unbelievable!
We loved exploring and hiking in the area for a couple of days, and absolutely loved returning in the evening to this hidden gem of a B&B. Go and enjoy!
