We found our 2 bedroom unit to be absolutely beautiful and comfortable. The furnishings and finishing touches on the place were extraordinary. Cindy and Dale are hosts that can give you excellent tips about where to hike, eat and play! They have many resources to help you identify plants and birds as well.

“Little Piece of Rainforest Paradise”

I could gush for hours about the Hiker's Retreat. The small little bungalow was beautifully kept, quiet and everything we could have asked for as we explored Volcano. Dale was a wonderful host, making it easy to collect the keys, immediately fixing the wifi when it went down and making sure we had his full contact information and resources when a tropical storm loomed (luckily it never hit!).

The Hiker's Retreat is a cozy get away for two. The multiple skylights let in plenty of natural light so it feels like you're sleeping under the stars. One morning when we woke up, it was so soothing to hear the rain tap on the windows, we almost didn't want to start our day! The private lanai was wonderful and as you strolled back on the property, you were met by small winding trails and a peaceful stream.

Thank you Dale for an absolutely perfect stay during our vacation at Volcano!

We stayed for 6 nights (the 6th was free!) and enjoyed it immensely. We felt secluded and peaceful in the Apapane cottage; the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped (coffee, granola and fresh fruit [for the 1st day] provided), the cottage layout was great and the grounds were amazing. The location was 5 minutes from Volcanoes NP, but was well off the main highway and dead quiet at night. Easy access to restaurants, gas, supplies, etc. and also only 25 minutes to Hilo. The best part was the cool weather, it was nice to escape the tropical heat of the coast. Should we return to the area, we will plan our trip around the availability of the cottage; we liked it that much.

“Immaculate cottage with many sweet touches”
Reviewed 10 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We stayed in the Apapane Guesthouse for two nights. The interior is absolutely adorable and the owners have taken so much care to ensure that it has everything you could need. I was also blown away by how clean it was. Magical spot, quiet location, so much to see in the area. I'd like to come back and stay longer next time!

“Gorgeous”
Reviewed 16 January 2015 for a stay in January 2015

I booked the Hikers Retreat for 2 nights. The cottage was lovely, and there was plenty of space in the cottage. The skylight in the roof was nice, although I was dripped on my condensation a few times during the night. The place is very peaceful, but is only a 3-4 min drive to the village centre.

“Beautiful Cottage”

We stayed in the Hiker's Retreat Cottage for our recent trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was the perfect location! We were only a couple of miles away from the park entrance.

The cottage is small and cozy and definitely only large enough for two at the most. We felt like we were nestled in the rainforest. It rained every night we were there and I loved listening to the rain on the roof. There isn't a full kitchen but there is a microwave, refrigerator and tiny dining table. The wood and tiling on the interior are beautiful. It felt a bit damp and cool when we arrived every evening, but there's a gas fireplace that soon warmed us up. We got back early enough one night to watch one of the DVDs they keep on hand. They have a good selection of local books and a couple of games and puzzles as well.

Volcano is a bit far away from everything else. We also went to Hilo and Mauna Kea and we wished we had been a bit closer for that. We hit some traffic around Hilo both mornings we went in and were much later catching our flight than we intended to be. Leave a bigger cushion than you would expect.

If the park is truly all you're interested in though, this is the perfect place to stay.

“Enchanted rainforest it was!”

The cottage was immaculate and well-appointed. Surrounded by Hapu'u Ferns, trees and blooming anthuriums. Bird song in the morning, rain on the roof. What's not to like? There's a lot more to this story, but if you only read this far, it is a great value and wonderful accommodation. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

The "more to the story" is Hurricane Iselle was bearing down on Hawaii the day we were due to arrive. We had quite a bit of communication with Dale & Cindy, and we very much appreciated their candor and taking the time to give us an assessment of the situation from their perspective. And they even promised to have our cottage ready as promised would we have kept to our original plans. We decided to wait it out mid-travel in Seattle and luckily by the time we got to Volcano there was no damage to their premises and the power was back on. They did a lovely act of kindness by upgrading us to the Apapane Cottage (we were slated for the studio) as those guests had cancelled and while we would have certainly enjoyed our stay in the studio, we really appreciated the cottage very much. And oh, how I miss that shower! (Read other descriptions.) It was so wonderful!

You are in a neighborhood and the larger house on the property was eventually occupied by a family that included a baby, but it was really quiet overall. All the surrounding vegetation helps absorbs the other noises of human activity (which included a lot of chain saw noise, for the fallen trees in Volcano as a result of the hurricane. However, we're from Alaska so sounded like home. HA!) You will hear birds during the day and crickets at night and rain on the roof. And its conveniently located to the park and venues in Volcano. We highly recommend this VRBO.
