“Fabulous location and a Home from Home”

We spent 1 week of our 3 week visit to Hawaii in this lovely cottage in Volcano and were really happy that we did! The cottage is really well appointed and perfect for couples - whether you want to go out exploring or if you just want to chill out, make a nice meal and watch a movie. The cottage itself is great and aptly named - after we left, I really missed the constant chirping, buzzing and general chatter of all the creatures who call the rain forest their home. Although you are really close to the main road and can easily get to numerous tourist spots and attractions from the cottage, you still feel like you are in the middle of nowhere - which we loved. You are just minutes away from the Volcanoes National Park and having bought a ticket to get into the park we found we could return as much as we wanted during the week using the same ticket. We took full advantage of this for example by getting up at 4 am to see the volcano in the dark, fitting in a quick hike before popping back to the cottage for a relaxed breakfast (with a lovely fresh cup of coffee) and then returning to the park for a longer hike or a drive down the Chain of Craters road. It only took about 5 minutes in the car to get to the park from the cottage so we could see just as much of the Volcano and the park as we wanted - perfect!
When we had had enough of hiking, it was simple enough to go to the beach for the day- just about a hour's drive in the direction of Hilo. The climate changes dramatically on the way to Hilo so if it feels a bit cold and damp for your tastes in Volcano, you can get about a +20 degree difference in temperature within a hour's drive! As Volcano itself is very small with limited amenities, it really is best to go to a supermarket in Kona or Hilo (depending on where you fly in from) before you arrive. We made lots of great meals in the cottage, and found we had all the pans and utensils that we needed and we really enjoyed reviewing our hundreds of photos of the volcano over dinner with a nice glass of wine. Although I hear the restaurants around Volcano are good they are relatively expensive- possibly because there isn't much choice of places to eat - so we preferred to cater for ourselves that week.
The Volcano Winery is about 10 mins drive away and certainly worth a visit - it's a great way to pass an hour or 2 - especially if the weather is not good. We found the weather in volcano to be quite changeable so do pack clothes for all weathers - especially if you want to visit the park after dark as it gets very cold. The cottage does have a washer and a drier so if you happen so get wet/ muddy/ sandy etc then you can always get clean and dry again- really handy!
Although we didn't need to use it, the cottage has got a log burning fire but we always found it to be a really good temperature indoors. It does get chilly outside at night but the bed was always very comfy and warm and, although some people have suggested there should be a separate bedroom, for us the plan of the cottage worked really well - mostly we were so exhausted by all our adventures during the day it was nice to just get comfy on the bed after dinner and drift off to sleep.
Brenda and Tommy were really great hosts and, even when we called them at night in a panic because one of the washers on the taps on the bath had broken and the bathroom was flooding, they calmly told us where to shut off the water and even got a plumber straight over in the morning to fix it!
For us it really felt like a home from home - there didn't seem to be anything we were missing ( except perhaps a mop for bathroom flooding disasters!!) . Add to that the brilliant location for exploring the Big Island and you have a really winning combination! When we are lucky enough to return to Hawaii we would certainly like to go back to Singing Forest Cottage.

Very comfortable bed - contemporary & stylish design. Minutes from Volcano National Park. Laundry, 2-person hot tub, fireplace & full kitchen. Large, luxurious, pebble-floor shower. Quiet, peaceful and very romantic. It was the perfect place for our honeymoon.

“Amazing retreat very close to Volcano town and national park”

We stayed at this lovely retreat for two nights while we explored Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's made up of one large living area which also contains a super comfy king bed, fireplace and dining area which leads into a well-appointed kitchen on one side and an amazing bathroom with a massive shower and fabulous deep wooden bath on the other. There is also a hot tub on the back patio and a washer/dryer. It also had a very reliable and speedy free wi-if service.
It's less than a 10-minute drive from the entrance to the park, and less than 5 minutes to the town of Volcano.
It was the perfect place for us to base ourselves for our adventures in the park, and a relaxing haven to come back to after a hard day of hiking.
Brenda was an outstanding host, nothing was too much trouble - she even drove 15 minutes from her home to bring us a box of matches when we couldn't get the fire lit with the igniter. Now that's service with a smile!
Volcano Singing Forest is a great place to stay - we only wish we could have stayed longer! Highly recommended!

“if only it had a bedroom!”
Reviewed 2 January 2013 for a stay in November 2012

A very good initial impression until you notice that a monstrously large bed, with even larger wooden surrounds, occupies the living area as there is no bedroom. Very good large kitchen, but no toaster. Superb bathroom. There's a hot tub on the balcony (where a bedroom could be) and it's very noisy all night. We turned it off on the power supply outside and put it on again when we left, with an apology left in the guest book. Dining table mainly occupied by large DVD. We removed it and cleaned the dusty table so we could use the table.
Internet link is cable, not WiFi, so tough if you've got a tablet or smartphone.
This place has the potential to be excellent as it's so convenient for Volcano national park and is has a stunning design in parts.
Bring food with you as local shops are minimalist.

Aloha,
I was very surprised to read your review. I am sorry you were disappointed in Volcano Singing Forest. It is obvious it was not for you. I have other cottages suited for couples who want more rooms. My cottage is a vacation home for couples wanting a retreat and romance, hot tub, fireplace and a large bed... I have many photos on Flipkey and if you read my advertisement carefully and observed my photos you would have seen the large wooden king bed and everything was in one room. My cottage looks just like the photos and is advertised as a studio which means here in America, one room. I advertise a large plush king bed .
The DVD was issued by the cable company which is large(12"x8") but not as large as a person. The table sits 4..
However, I have requested from the cable company a smaller DVD.
My table is dusted before a guess check in so I guess the dust was under the DVD. A misfortunate overlook on my part..
I know the hot tub is a little noisy. I have no control over this.. Turning it off at night is want we recommend.,
I did heed your advice and have since then installed a router for wireless.
I have also included in my Confirmation letter that if you plan on doing extended cooking to purchase food items in Hilo and Kona before arriving in Volcano.

This is my business and I take all of this very serious. A review can cause potential guess lost and I feel people should think before they post a review. It should be based on things that can be improved not on personal preferences like wanting a bedroom unless the business misrepresented themselves...

Best regards.
Brenda Carson

“In town, yet isolated and tranquil”

The cottage was a great departure from the traditional hotel room in Hilo and other major centres - we were looking to get a bit closer to the volcano and this worked out great.

The hottub on the rear porch was good for soaking after a long march across the lava field at Kalapana. Definitely watch out for those door locks though - we locked ourselves out of the cottage in the middle of the night which was a bit of a worry given it was pouring rain and cold weather.

The bathroom is enormous and the large shower with pebbled floor and natural surrounds was wonderful.

The only downside was the lack of heating - it was chilly and damp when we stayed and we had a wood fire, but it was slow to get started, didn't throw a lot of heat and went out a couple of times. A portable heater would not have the charm, of course, but would have warmed us up a bit faster.

If you're looking for an escape (and can keep a fire lit!), you couldn't do better than this place - it's on a small block in a town when you look at Google Maps, but the reality is that the surrounding bushland and ferns all around the house means you can't see anyone, and they can't see you.

“Quiet, Romantic, and only a couple of miles from Volcanoes Nat'l Park!”
Reviewed 20 September 2012 for a stay in September 2012

My husband and I visited the Big Island to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and chose this lovely cottage near Volcanoes National Park to spend the first four days of our trip. The cottage is exactly as shown in the photos: clean, well-appointed, and tastefully decorated.

The full kitchen made it possible for us to enjoy meals in, which is perfect for budget-conscious travelers. There are a couple of restaurants within a short distance of the cottage, but one was already closed for the season, and another was very expensive. The third was a bar/grill type establishment, which wasn't bad, but not a place we'd want to have all our meals. Having kitchen facilities allowed my husband and I to prepare meals at *home*. (There is no good grocery store nearby, so you'll need to pick up food stuff in Kona or Hilo)

The bathroom was beautiful, with a large stone shower, a soaking tub, plenty of towels, candles, and a few small samples of shampoo and soap. (You will need your own toiletries, as this is not a hotel and these items are not replenished) The only thing missing was a blow dryer, but fortunately my hair dries quickly. I would have appreciated the blow dryer for the one night we dined at the fancier restaurant, however.

The cottage advertises that there is a DVD player, and there were a few DVDs available near the TV, but we searched high and low and could not find the DVD player. This was a disappointment as my husband purchased a DVD about the volcanoes and we had to watch it on his laptop. There is high speed internet, via ethernet cable to the router, but wireless would have been more convenient so that we could both use the internet at the same time. Not a big deal - we only used it to check our emails each morning and to research things to see and do in the area.

Although the cottage is located in a neighborhood, it is sufficiently hidden away in the trees which made us feel that we were in the middle of a rainforest, totally alone. The singing birds woke us each morning, as did a daily light rain shower. The lanai was a perfect place to enjoy coffee in the morning. After the short rain shower each morning, the sun would come out and warm the air. It was lovely!

The close proximity of the cottage to Volcanoes Park Entrance, made visits to the park after dark (to see the glowing caldera) easy, and we took advantage of that.

All in all, I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to be close to the park, enjoys solitude, and prefers a home environment rather than a hotel experience. And it's romantic too! :)

If our travels bring us back to the Big Island, I would most definitely book the Singing Forest Cottage again!

Aloha,
Thank you for your review. After your stay and request for a blow dryer I did buy one. I have also replaced a DVD player as I think it found a new home.
