“1 of 2 upscale dining choices in Volcano”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2014

The reason you come to The Rim is the view of the reflected lava. The food and drink are pleasant accompaniments to the view. (NOTE: If you want more casual fare, eat in the lounge.) We had a 6:30pm reservation, arrived at 6:20pm, and were promptly seated. Be sure to make a reservation! We tried to get in a few nights before at 6pm and they only had availability starting at 8:15pm...

The waiter was friendly but seemed anxious to hurry us through our ordering process. We started with a bottle of pinot noir (decent wine list and fair pricing) and shared guacamole and homemade root veggie chips. As others have noted, there was an abundance of chips compared to the amount of guacamole but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

Dinner was tasty - good, but not excellent. We enjoyed the kampachi, catch of the day (ono), and pineapple wrapped fish (ahi). If you want a nice view and a nice dinner, this is a good venue. If you're looking for a high end meal to write home about, then you need to drive to the other side of the island. But how often can you say you enjoyed a nice meal and drinks while watching clouds cross the caldera and the glow of the lava all evening???

“Food was better than the view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

The food was exciting, well-prepared, and professionally served. We had an excellent grass-fed steak, delicious fish, and our two children had kid food that they liked, too.

The view was disappointing. Dusk afforded the best view -- you could really see the glowing crater. After that, we saw only a vaguely pulsing orange light.

Also, the way the restaurant is laid out is strange. Bizarrely, about 1/3 of the tables right by the front windows have views obstructed by columns and vegetation. The first table we were shown was stuck in the corner with no view whatsoever. There were three empty tables with nice views, but we were told they were reserved and were instead offered a table one line in from the windows but with an otherwise unobstructed view. Well, OK, but during our 1.5 hour dinner the empty, "reserved" tables stayed empty.

So, if you want a fancy meal during your visit at Volcanoes National Park, The Rim fits the bill. But don't expect a great view.

“Very Good but Paying Some for the View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

First off, I will say the service here was excellent. Its a bit pricey, though we're from Alaska so seemed in the ball park for us. My husband had some ahi and I had the steak, which were prepared very nicely. The salad was very good, and made with local ingredients. I'm only marking this down a notch as we had similar fare at similar prices at the Kilauea Lodge and it was just that much better there. We also ate at the adjacent George's Lounge twice which features a more limited selection from the same menu and we thought the Barbecue Shrimp and the pizza were very good. We also liked the Root Vegetable chips with guacamole, my only complaint being you get a ton of chips with very little guacamole and to get more would have added an additional $6. They should just make more to begin with. Also, the desserts were very good. The Kona Coffee Chocolate cheesecake could have been a meal to itself. LOL My husband had the mac nut pie one night, and on some other nights we also had the assorted fruit sorbets and the local made vanilla ice cream. The ice cream was right after the power outage ended from Hurricane Iselle, so all they had at the time. But it was very good.

“Breakfast is great! Get a reservation for Dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

We have eaten here on two occasions, and had an excellent experience both times!

First was dinner, just a few weeks after the Volcano House had reopened. We were greeted by a very nice young lady at the front of the house who quickly seated us at a window table - this was great because the place was packed and it seemed everyone except for us had reservations! The view right off the bat was unreal with Kilaueas summit eruption seen from our table in the distance. Table was nicely set with high end dishware and cloth napkins. We ordered a bottle of bubbly and it came within minutes in a silver ice bucket set table side. Dinner was great, fish tasted very fresh and the salad was as well. Not enough room for dessert so can't comment on that!

We then tried the breakfast buffet during our next stay and really enjoyed it. Again the view was second to none as it was a very clear morning and you could see all the way across the volcano summit, in addition to the mighty Mauna Loa in the distance. Options for breakfast were good, we had smoothies, fresh fruit (including local poha berries), and some of the hot options as well. The waffle station was excellent with fresh made waffles and many local toppings including mac nuts and mango puree. Fresh egg station as well, any way you want it - two thumbs up to the guy running these stations, he was friendly and efficient especially for working both stations at the same time. Only downer for me was the potatoes, they were underseasoned and dry but then again I am very particular when it comes to any kind of potatoes (must be my Irish blood!).

Overall excellent for both experiences and we would highly recommend this restaurant to family, friends, and all visitors to Kilauea volcano and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park!

“Good food, excellent view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

The view from the restaurant is beautiful and unique. At night, they turned down the lights to accentuate the glow from the volcano. And the food was good. Make your reservations well in advance.
