this place is cool. It nods and winks at the TV series "Lost" without having to try. Felt we were in a kinder and gentler Darma Initiative. if you never saw the show, you will like hanging out and seeing a working farm that strives to be eco-friendly. Owners Alan and Bobbie are kind and helpful. Don't go for the breakfast, go for the experience!

I live in Kona. My friends and my family decided to go to Volcano for 2 days and nights of play. We loved the house we rented. The rooms easily accomodated our 2 seven year olds and 2 three year olds as well as 3 adults. The area was very kid friendly, peaceful and quiet. The owners have set up a very functional stay which included privacy when you wanted it. If you wanted to venture to a shared area, their "Breakfast Lanai" with hot tub awaits. This area was fully stocked with self serve breakfast items which included local fresh fruits...yummy! It is a short drive to get to Volcano village or the Volcano National Park. Would definitely recommend this to my friends and we will be back.

A tiny, magical village of guest houses and cottages in the middle of rainforest as close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as you can get.

When we arrived, Bonnie came out of the "Breakfast Lanai" - the building for breakfast and hot tub usage - where she was having a Chinese New Year party. After checking us in across the way, she invited us to join the party! Talk about feeling like a welcome guest!

Located on a dead end road without other roads behind it, you are truly in a quiet, secluded place. To get from cottage to cottage, you walk through winding little pathways through the rain forest (they provide flashlights for when it is dark!).

We stayed in Olapa 2. Comfy bed and beautiful (private) bathroom off the hallway. We loved that there was a kitchen in the cottage too. We brought basic groceries to make PB&J sandwiches for our hike and warm up soup for dinner (and save serious dollars avoiding pricey Volcano restaurants).

In addition to the flashlights (which we also used in the lava tube at the park), they have gloves, umbrellas, guide books, etc. – all to make your stay there and visit to the park more enjoyable. I highly recommend staying at least two nights so you can spend a full day at the park... seeing the glow of lava at night is an experience you don't want to miss.

Breakfast was bagels, cereals, oatmeal, fresh fruit, etc. Only complaint was that it took a little time to figure out where everything was located.

Eco-pluses: At least 3 recycling "centers" located around the property, compost bin at breakfast, biodegradable laundry soap (they allow guests to use the facilities) and collected rain water. Be prepared for towels that are on the smaller side: they save hundreds of kilowatts every year by fitting more of them in one load of laundry.

This review is simply to provide fellow traveler's a little more information regarding Claudia's Place than appears on Volcano Guest House's website.

Overall, VGH did well as a B&B for the area. The location was very convenient to the town (not walking distance though) and Volcano national park. The breakfast, while not prepared, certainly had enough options and was enjoyable. It's availability throughout the day was convenient. Fresh papaya and apple bananas were a nice local touch. The room itself was clean and the bed comfortable. If you desire any form of privacy, however, I would recommend one of the other cottages. The website floorplan shows what appears to be a cute two room place with a private bath and a porch shared with the main house. In reality, the porch is used as a lobby for the property and is where all other guests come to check-in, check-out, ask questions/directions and peruse the travel books available for use. The porch does not contain a table or chairs and cannot be used as a place to sit and relax. In addition, the location just off what functions as a lobby means you will hear people coming in/out starting at 6-7 AM when the owners start their daily routine. The walls are very thin so you'll be able to hear any conversations between the owners and other guests in the morning about checking out or things to do in the area. On our one night stay this meant being woken up throughout the moring. You should not expect to sleep in or have a quiet leisurely morning. The reverse is also true....most of your noise will be heard by anyone in the porch/lobby area (the bathroom shares a wall and window with the porch). I would have no problem recommending the VGH to other traveler's and hope the owner's update their website to make sure people have an idea what to expect.

I would ask the owners to consider removing the porch from the description or replacing it with common area.

This is a great, reasonably priced B&B close to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Super clean and with very friendly owners. Much of the B&B was recently built and is located on a lovely space right outside of Volcano. A+A+.

We stayed one night and were quite pleased. A bit hard to find but worth it (also, we forgot our directions). Room opala 1, 2 twin beds, private bath, shared kitchen facilities (if desired). The breakfast lanai is open 24/7 and we went and got milk about 11 pm. Breakfast is self-serve and consists of oatmeal, cereal, fruit, bagels, english muffins, juice, coffee, etc. Very laid back and relaxed. Would have appreciated a bit more info on seeing volcano at night but other than that, really nice and a great value for the money ($105 per night).

We stayed in the Olapa house at the Volcano Guest House. The house was immaculately clean and well stocked with the basics -- dishes, cups, glasses etc. Also several unexpected amenities such as TVs in the bedrooms with DVD players and an assortment of DVDs available at the check-in office. A very nice breakfast including fresh local fruit was available on the breakfast lanai. After a day of hiking at nearby Volcanoes National Park, it was terrific to come back and luxuriate in the jacuzzi hot tub which was very clean, nice and hot, and adjacent to a shower stocked with soap, shampoo and towels. The grounds are well maintained with gravel paths meandering through tall ferns with antheriums and statuary. Our hosts were very friendly and accomodating. We loved our stay and told Bonnie, our host that we would come back whereupon she invited us to take a look at all the other rooms. We had stayed in the Olapa house which I would say we liked the best but every other option was equally clean and well stocked. In summary, you can't go wrong at Volcano Guest House. I highly recommend it.
