Probably the BEST place to stay in this location in the vicinity of the National Park vocanoes. The drive was only five minutes to the main attractions. So much to see and do in the area. We only stayed 2 nights and could have stayed 4 nights had we only planned.
Volcano Village Lodge is the charming property you dream about when traveling. The lodge is a collection of little cottages in a quiet area side street in the middle of a kind of mini jungle.
The breakfast is waiting in the fridge the night before. The selection is very varied. Definitely eat in moderation as the ladies place a lot of food for you in your room. The papayas taste as good here as anywhere else in the Hawaiian islands.
There are more papayas waiting for you outside the main lodge. Simply take one if you are hungry and want fresh food.
Really enjoyed the lodge and the area.

First of all, the surroundings are impressive! Suddenly you are in the middle of a rain forest with lush vegetation. Our room had big glass windows and a glass door to a small balcony that made us feel in the middle of the forest but at the same time with privacy and comfort. Due to the high altitude it was cold at night while we were there in March. The bed heating was a nice touch and we slept very well during the two nights we spent there.
The Lodge is only a short drive away from the Volcanoes National Park, making it perfect to explore the park.
The place was delightful and relaxing and we had such a nice view that it is one of those places where you enjoy every minute in your room! Spend at least two nights to enjoy the place and the surroundings with no rush.
I highly recommend it for the beauty, comfort, location and the forest.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Volcano Village Lodge a few weeks ago and we had a delightful stay. It was a nice place with beyond expectation romance.
The room we had was a dream come true. We had a view of the rainforest out of our window that I couldnt get over.
Our only issue was that parking was a little tight for our car. When you get 6 cars in the lot it is cramped. We parked on the street one day and that was no problem at all.
We enjoyed the breakfast in the room, the soft robes and slippers. the comfortable bed, and the service. The place is quiet, romantic, and a perfect island retreat.
The famous cat was recovering and locked in the lodge when we were there. Had a chance to meet Gino once.

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review of our property! We are happy to hear you enjoyed your time in the last of the Hawaiian rainforest. We appreciate your feedback regarding our parking lot. We are working on a solution to make the area more efficient for the number of guest vehicles. Mahalo!

This is my first TA review, so go easy on me. I had the stay of my life and wanted to share my joy.
Describe the service you experienced:
We agree that hands down our stay at Volcano VIllage Lodge was the best of our entire time in Hawaii. The peaceful Zen calm of the property deserves to be shared with all travelers.
Tell us how you liked the room:
We slept the best we'd slept during our entire trip to Hawaii. The Zen felling of the grounds continued into the night. We felt truly at peace in our cozy lodge. A lodge with furnishings, decor, amenities, detail and even service that the top hotels often miss. We awoke each morning to breakfast being in our refrigerator waiting for us on our time schedule. We ate our breakfast one day in bed and one day on our private patio. Yes, it was cool on the patio, but we ate in a surrounding of lush tropical flowers and vegetation that is rarely enjoyed by us Northern Cali types.
Talk about the location & amenities:
The location is as good as it gets. We were in a rainforest only a short distance from the town and the national park.
Say what you liked best & least:
All in all, we had a perfect and memorable escape at this quiet and peaceful location.
Best: The owners thought of everything we needed from umbrellas to flashlights.
Least: Our stay was too short. We could have had a larger piece of quiche.
Here in San Jose tonight as the sun sets I can only dream about our wonderful stay and look forward to a future trip.

Here is my travel advice, If you are visiting anywhere in Hawaii do yourself a favor and reserve a room (more like a bungalow) at this place in Volcano Village!
You will be surprised when you arrive! I know we were! We were lucky to have the opportunity to get a reservation and stay at the Volcano Village Lodge. So many of the dates were sold out when we made our reservations.
Silly us, we even planned our vacation around staying here. We spent a few nights here before heading on to Oahu. This place was as wonderful as all the reviews. We picked it becauase of what has been writen about the place in a few guide books.
We spent several days on the big island then Oahu. The islands are as different as Boulder, CO and Denver.
This lodge is an absolute perfect place to stay if you are visiting the volcano and park.

My husband & I spent 2 nights of our honeymoon at the Volcano Village Lodge in the Hale Manaluna room and wished we had stayed longer! The lodge is in a secluded, residential, rainforest location just 5 minutes from Volcanoes National Park. At night, it was so dark and quiet, perfect for sleeping and we felt incredibly safe. We really enjoyed staying in the Hale Manaluna room as that room is located away from the other rooms and has access to the common room after hours. The common room has plenty of DVDs to choose from which is great. The room has a very comfortable bed and electric fireplace/heater. We definitely used the heater as it was cold at night when we were there. There is also has a refrigerator, toaster oven and microwave which we definitely took advantage of. The lodge provided snacks, fruit and quiche in our room each day. There is also a hot tub available to all guests. Megan, the lodge caretaker, was very helpful in providing local insight. She suggested a lava hike (Kalapana Cultural Tours) which we never would have known about had she not mentioned to us…and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire 2-week Hawaii trip! Overall, Volcano Village Lodge is a unique and comfortable place to stay while in Volcano and I highly recommend. If I ever return to Volcano, I will definitely stay at Volcano Village Lodge again.

Aloha!

We appreciate your kind words. Isn't the lava hike an out-of-this-world experience? Since the lava flow is always changing, our Innkeepers do our best to keep up-to-date and make the best recommendations possible. We are happy that Meghan was able to make such a memorable recommendation for you. We'd love to see some photos from your tour!

Mahalo for taking the time to write a review. We look forward to seeing you again in the future!

The lodge was a unique concept for us, we were looking forward to a rainforest experience. The setting and views were very much as pictured on the website, and we had expected it to be damp and chilly (it was). We liike to let the birds wake us up in the morning, but it was really too chilly to leave the windows open more than a crack.... it was easier to SEE nature than to HEAR it. We stayed in the Mauna Kea, which is described on the website as being a mirror image of the Haleakala.....but the website does not say the two share a common wall (between the bathrooms) which is noisy. It worked out OK for us but if you are a light sleeper and have noisy neghbors, your stay could be less tranquil than the setting and reviews would suggest. The only significant caveat with the B&B has to do with the limited dinner options in the area. While there are about 6 places serving lunch, only 3 serve dinner, so I would not think this would be a good stop for more than a couple of nights: the next closest location with any dining options is Hilo which is over 20 miles (and am sure very dark roads at night) But if you are going to see the volcano, your option is either a LONG day trip from Hilo, or stay at Volcano Village, and the lodge has to be one of the best accomodations for that.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

Something that surprises many of our guests is that Volcano Village is located at approximately 3500' above sea level, so our temperatures range from 70s during the day to 50s overnight. The elevation change is so gradual on the drive up from Hilo that many people don't even notice it! Our rooms have fireplaces and dehumidifiers that guests are encouraged to use to keep things warm and dry.

While we are currently seeing a shortage in dinner options in the area, the town of Volcano Village has a new restaurant opening this month, and another opening in the near future. We are hopeful that these new restaurant options will fulfill the area's needs for quality dinning.

We hope to see you again in the future!
