“Great comfort in a rustic cabin”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

This lodge was a little hard to find, but that turned out to be a plus. We had privacy and quiet in a rain forest setting. Though the lodging was a cabin, the mattress was extremely comfortable and the shower was just great. Don't expect a great breakfast, but the food is waiting in your room fridge, so you don't have to clean up and go to a breakfast room. The staff is very helpful.

Aloha,

We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at Volcano Village Lodge. In the state of Hawaii, permitted bed & breakfasts are unable to provide hot meals in the morning. Our creative way of providing a balanced breakfast is to prepare and serve the meal the evening before. We were happy to hear that you enjoyed being able to eat in your own room without having to get cleaned up before breakfast.

We strive to provide a 5 star service and are disappointed to see that you only rated us at 4. If you have any suggestion for improvement, you can reach out directly to our manager at host@volcanovillagelodge.com. We take our customer feedback very seriously.

We hope to see you again the next time you visit the Big Island!

The property itself was nice and clean. We stayed in the Mauna Kea room which was a good size and the breakfast left in the room was very good (fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, cinnamon French toast (that you can heat in the small toaster oven)! Being in the volcano area and the rainforest meant that the temperature dropped at night so there is actually a fireplace in the room and no air conditioning. The lodge is just a minute or two from the "town", but nice in that it is located just slightly further away and about a 5 minute drive from the park.

However, there were a few issues that given the price seem slightly at odds. There was nobody at the lodge when we arrived (even though we arrived at 4pm which was between the hours of 3-6pm that they indicate to come). There was a note with our name on it advising that they would be back tomorrow and with some instructions about the room. There is also a trolley in which you can load your luggage and roll it to your room. This would all be ok and somewhat understandable, if not for the fact that when we finally met one of the two innkeepers she could only look up from her computer and say hello. It would have been nice to at least say, 'sorry we missed you yesterday, have you found everything ok'?

Regardless, the lodge is very nice if you are looking for nature and solitude. We had a good two night stay, but I don't know that I would recommend much longer unless you are spending a great deal of time hiking in the park.

Mahalo nui loa for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us.
At Volcano Village Lodge, we pride ourselves on world-class hospitality and are sorry we did not meet those standards. Check-in time is between 3pm-6pm. However, due to the remote location of Volcano Village, our innkeepers do need to run errands in Hilo. With that said, we do leave self check-in information, a map to the appropriate room, and a phone number to call if there are any questions.
Again, we are sorry to hear that the service provided was not five stars and we will be addressing the issue with our staff.
Mahalo and we hope to see you on a future visit to Hawaii Island.

We stayed 2 nights at the Volcano Village Lodge on our honeymoon. From reading all of the extremely positive reviews on Trip Advisor (which I use to book all of my trips), perhaps my expectations were too high. Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much- the setting is great, the rooms are unique and the proximity to Volcanoes National Park is excellent. Few nit picks that we didn't like - our room (the Mauna Kea) was connected to another room and we could hear our neighbors talking/flush the toilet. Took a bit away from the tranquil "you're in the middle of nowhere" feel. The "luxury" feel I'd hoped for from other reviews was lacking - you carry your luggage yourself to your room, breakfast is odd (we didn't venture to try the "reheat in the microwave" food that was provided and the cereal that was left was stale. The bathroom had a tiny stall shower from the 1980s. If I was going to Volcano again would I stay here? Yes. But just wanted other travelers to have a bit of an expectation-check. there is very little to do in Volcano other than Volcanoes National Park (which is amazing) but know that there's no night life- and not even that many restaurants to choose from.

Mahalo for taking the time to write a review of our property. Volcano Village Lodge is, indeed, located close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the heart of the native rain forest. Volcano Village, is a small town located 45 minutes from Hilo. In general, the Island of Hawaii lacks “night life”, which is what draws many in. The room, Mauna Kea, is a mirror image room to that of Haleakala. Both units were built, brand new, in 2009 and kept the same architecture as the other buildings. We are taking this review into consideration on how to improve the bathrooms with the space of the unit.
Also, at Volcano Village Lodge, we pride ourselves on world-class hospitality and we’re sorry to hear we did not meet your standards. Since we have gravel walkways, to ease the carrying of luggage, we do provide a wagon and offer our services to help.
Furthermore, Volcano Village Lodge is not permitted by the County of Hawaii to serve hot items. Most guests like the convenience of our breakfasts and enjoy spending time in their rooms. Prior to arrival we do reach out to our guests, asking of dietary restrictions or food preferences, and encourage people during their stay to ask the innkeepers for anything.
Mahalo nui loa and we look forward to seeing you again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this quirky (fun) place. Marvelous atmosphere among the tree ferns feeling like we are deep in the forest. Made a lovey change from the more conventional places to stay, we wish we had stayed longer

Mahalo for your review of Volcano Village Lodge!

Our rainforest getaway provides guests with a unique Hawaiian experience. Not only is the rainforest filled with beautiful Hapu'u fern trees and anthuriums, but also filled with magnificent sounds of the birds singing in the tall Ohia trees. It's hard not to relax and unwind in such a peaceful area.

We welcome you back again and again!

We stayed here for two nights as part of our honeymoon, after spending 5 nights on the Kona side of the big island.

We "checked in" and were greeted and shown the property and everything in our room, wow! The pictures on the website gave us an idea, but we were very impressed to be there in person! We stayed for 2 nights in the Mauna Loa suite. Our room had all kinds of amenities, the bathroom even had a towel warmer and bathrobes and slippers for us to use! Being in the forest on the Eastern side of the big island it gets a little chilly at night, we even turned on the fireplace. We used the hot tub which was very nice(but only really big enough for 2).

In the morning we awoke to several different birds chirping outside, and the sunlight coming in almost all sides of the room, very cool. The breakfast was placed in our fridge the day beforehand, the first day it was a quiche, the second day it was French toast and sausage! The fridge was also well stocked with juices, milk, creamers, etc. They also placed a large basket of goodies on the table with everything from granola bars to cereal to nuts.

We loved staying here and it was truly a unique place being tucked away in the woods. Mahalo!

My new wife and I stayed here in early May 2014 on our honeymoon, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. While a convenient 45 minutes away from Hilo, the lodge definitely has a remote adventurous feel to it by the time you arrive. Upon pulling in to the property, you will find a charming reception lodge with a great number of complimentary amenities, including Wi-Fi, couches and chairs to relax, an extensive DVD collection for the in-room DVD players, a laptop you can use, maps & tour info, snorkel gear, and often some fresh baked goodies.

The rooms themselves are mini-cabins that are situated along a series of wooden walkways connecting from the main reception area. While not too far apart, they all open towards a private view of the rainforest (i.e. each room has several glass walls but they aren't facing the other cabins). We stayed in the Kilauea lodge, which was plenty spacious for our needs, but might be a bit small if you require a separate sitting area. There is a breakfast table in the corner of the room with two chairs, a TV with DVD player, a coffe maker, a fridge that comes stocked with the next morning's breakfast (fruit, quiche and juice when we stayed) and a nice bathroom area at the back of the lodge. The view is absolutely stunning... you're surrounded on 3 sides by bright green rainforest and colorful tropical flowers. The ambiance is quiet and serene, with only the sound of chirping birds and the occasional laughter of guests in the nearby hot tub. While three of the walls are glass, we never felt that we lacked privacy.

The lodge is located about 1 mile from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park, so this is an excellent location to base your adventure to this awesome part of Hawai'i. If the volcanoes aren't erupting, make sure to get up to the Jaggar Museum around sunset to catch the glow of lava in Kilauea's main crater against the night sky. There aren't a ton of places to get a meal nearby, but we enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Kilauea Lodge. They also have dinner there, which is supposedly excellent but pricey. The other night of our stay we drove into Hilo for dinner, since most activities are over by a relatively-early 6-7pm (when the sun sets).

All in all, the room was excellent, the complimentary amenities were a great bonus, the staff was extremely courteous and kind, and the location was top notch for exploring Volcanoes NP. If I had to offer one suggestion to the property, it would be to extend WiFi access to all the rooms (we couldnt connect in Kilauea). That said, it was kind of nice being off the grid in this fantastic serene resort.

Room Tip: Hale Kilauea is closest to the hot tub, but still maintains its privacy.
