“Extremely relaxing and a great break”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

We stayed in Bldg 5 in Kings Land and found everyone one to be pleasant and helpful. The shuttle was very convenient and the pools were immaculate. The Hilton hotel was a bit Disney like with its light rail and boat course, and one afternoon there was enough. Our unit was very large and well appointed with a walk in shower and a bubble tub. The kitchen was modern but surprisingly, didn't have salt or pepper.

Room Tip: Get a upper floor if possible - quiet!

Kingsland is a beautiful property with excellent service. They have overpriced food of average quality and were understaffed at the bar/cafe area (this is not a review of the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort - which had a completely different set of amenities and restaurants). The location was good for exploring the Kona area and the north side of the island (including Moana Kea), but was not good for multiple excursions to the Hilo side of the island or the south (it took about 2 1/2 hours to get to the Kalapana area for the lava tour we took with Kalapana Cultural Tours - worth every minute and cent it cost to do it!). The Waikoloa area is exceptionally windy, and the Hilo side is rainy! Doesn't seem like there is any perfect part of the island in terms of weather. But it is a totally otherworldly and special place that is a definite for the bucket list.

My wife and I live on the Hilo side of the Big Island, so we generally use our Kona side getaways as staycations that allow us to escape the everyday chores that surround us at home. King's Land provided us with the ultimate staycation because we never got bored or felt hassled during our week's stay.

Before we arrived I looked forward to having access to the pools at the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel because I love to go down the water slides. I had read that King's Land had wonderful pools, but I had no idea how wonderful. The water slides there are superior to the Hilton's, so we never bothered to go there. The pools and all but one of the spas are sanitized using saline rather than chlorine or bromine. The two-bedroom unit we had was large and well appointed. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the free activities were many and varied and presented with a spirit of generosity.

The negatives are few. The unit was probably designed by a man, so there was no mirror suitable for putting on makeup. The kitchen was full of all the pots, pans, utensils, etc. that you could ever want, but there was no place other than the refrigerator to store food. i think of it as a kitchen for someone who doesn't cook much. The main bathroom could us towel racks that were more accessible to the shower. The toilet paper could have been nicer. It would have been nice if the resort provided filters for the coffee maker (Melita #4 type), and the absence of salt and pepper was perplexing.

All of these negatives amounted to no more than minor annoyances, and our overall impression of the resort was overwhelmingly positive. We would happily stay here again.

The Kings Land property is farthest from the main Hilton Hotel, and takes a real effort to get to a beach. There is no real ocean beach on property, but as the concierge said, "all beaches in Hawaii are public." It does not take away from the fact that it takes time, effort, a car to find one. And whereever you go, there are not beach chairs accessible to you, unless you rent. Did not know there was not housekeeping service. When we called to request new towels, they asked "how many bath, hand, washcloths, etc.?" They wanted a number which I had not gone to our three bathrooms to find out. I asked if they could come and check, then just replace what needed to be replaced. They did not, they just brought 4 whole sets, then 2 more another day. We had piles of clean hand and washcloths, which just added clutter to the room. I go on vacation to be taken care of. I was really disappointed by the lack of service.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay. Kings' Land is most definitely not located and/or advertised to be on a beach. We are within a short drive, to the nearby Anaehoomalu Bay/beach, and guests of Kings' Land also have full access to the nearby Hilton Waikoloa Village, which you can get to using our complimentary shuttle service, of if you choose, complimentary parking. While the Hilton Waikoloa Village may not be on the "beach" either, they are an oceanfront property, and boast a beautiful lagoon to swim in as well an abundance of pools, water features, activities and restaurants. I would like to apologize for the services of our Housekeeping Department as well. While housekeeping services within the TimeShare industry does differ in terms of frequency from a typical hotel, we most definitely should have handled your situation much better, and will ensure we review our procedures to improve this aspect.

My family and I staying in a beautiful 2 bedroom suite and we were very pleased. It was great to have a kitchen. We barbequed at the rear of our building and it was fantastic. The rooms are a good size and the resort was beyond our expectation.

The Kingsland Resort is top notch in every detail. Great location- weather is very dependable, mostly sunny with very little rain compared to other parts of the Island. A half hour from the airport and "downtown" activities. About 2 hours to Hilo and Volcano national Park. Stay in the Kingsland area for the sunshine. Other areas of the Big Island can be cloudy and rainy. While on the BIg Island, try some local beaches (eg, Pauko) . They are beautiful and a nice change from hotel pools.

This is a wonderful location for families. No, you won’t get a view of the ocean, and yes, it’s a mile away from the main Hilton Waikoloa Resort, but you could easily spend a day in King’s Land and not get bored. This isn’t for people who expect full hotel services; although I think they provide enough to accommodate most people who have that expectation from a time share location, as they now offer to deliver pre-packaged food items up until 11 pm, after their restaurant closes at 7 pm. This is a time share property with 99% of the hotel amenities, with a great children’s program and a list of daily activities to keep you entertained. If you are single and looking to party, don’t stay at King’s Land. In fact, why are you even thinking to vacation on the Big Island if you are looking to party? Go to Maui or Waikiki, you’ll find much better night entertainment there.
My recommendation is to stop by Costco on your way from the Kona airport. And yes, rent a car! This is the Big Island, and everything is spread out, you’ll need a car to get from attraction to attraction. With that in mind, King’s Land location was actually great for us, as we ventured outside the resort almost every day. We were 30 minutes away from Kona, and 20 minutes away from Waimea. And since it’s closer to Saddle Road, which cuts through the middle of the island, we travelled through it when heading to Hilo and Volcano National Park. (Be careful when travelling through Saddle Road, as parts of it feel like a roller coaster ride!)
The staff there was friendly and very accommodating. The pool has 2 kiddie slides and 2 adult slides. It is beautifully landscaped and it’s populated with salt water, instead of chlorine. And since the pool is exclusive to King’s Land residence, you never really feel that it is too crowded. When you get bored, take the shuttle to the Hilton Waikoloa Resort to experience the lagoon and the bigger pools there – all included in your stay at King’s Land.
Take up an activity like a yoga class or water aerobics if you get the chance, the opportunity to talk to a local and get tips from them was invaluable to us. Our water aerobics instructor told us about the in-room massage that is available, and gave us a great tip to the Blue Dragon restaurant – which has live music and dancing Thursday through Sunday evenings weekly. The hotel also has a hula show on Thursday evening in the courtyard – again, very family friendly, as they invite children to join them and learn to hula with the performers.
The concierge had great tips as well. I called the concierge before we arrived, and booked a rafting tour with Adventure X Rafting, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Not to mention the great advice on making a reservation with Lava Lava Beach Club for dinner on our first night in town – super close to the hotel and amazing view!
We stayed at a 2 bedroom with 6 adults and it was not crowded at all. These rooms are made to accommodate large groups, and the doors and walls were thick enough to keep the noise within the rooms – my daughter and her friend who slept in the living room didn’t hear any snoring from either rooms.
The breakfast was good, standard Hilton breakfast that you would expect and at the same pricing anywhere else at a Hilton property. But that’s why we made a special trip to Costco and stopped by the grocery store in Queen’s Market (5 min. drive). We fully used our in-room kitchen, which I know has saved us money in the long run. The in-room washer and dryer came in handy as well.
Suggestions for the hotel: Signage to the resort was poor at best; there were no signs at all at Maintenance Road, which would be the first right turn after entering Waikoloa to get to King’s Land. Please consider putting up some better, bigger signs to direct visitors to the resort. Also, it was nice to be able to borrow a deck of cards and Scrabble from the towel desk, but I would recommend management to add additional board games, such as Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, and Yahtzee, since this is such a family oriented resort.
